Our first step is promoting the idea within the EU. If you live in an EU country, support the petition to the European Parliament. No matter where you are, your decisions and actions are part of the change. Support the idea Responsibility is our ability to change our lives In 2021, Ukraine became the first country in the world to establish a Human Responsibility Day at the state level. This day symbolizes the desire of Ukrainians to grow and develop on personal, social, and global levels. Learn more Responsibility is a guiding principle for the future The prominent Ukrainian economist, visionary, and philanthropist Bohdan Hawrylyshyn once said, «Individual responsibility is the key value that can change the world.» In 2014, he created the Declaration of Human Responsibilities, which includes 15 principles that embody the idea of responsibility as the foundation for implementing change on personal, interpersonal, and global levels. Learn more Responsibility is the freedom of happy people people Almost 80 years ago, the world community adopted the Declaration of Human Rights and established Human Rights Day, which is celebrated annually on December 6. Today it is important for us to realize not only that we have rights, but also that we are responsible for them. This awareness gives us the freedom to choose a happy life and implement changes for the sake of the future. The introduction of the Human Responsibility Day at the country level will help to start these changes. Why it matters The idea of Human Responsibility Day: why it matters When we build a house, we understand that it requires care and maintenance. It’s our property, and therefore, our responsibility. Similarly, when we bring pets into our lives, we nurture, care for, and heal them, because that’s our duty. We can be responsible owners, drivers, colleagues, students, and parents. So why is it challenging for us to embody the same sense of responsibility at the community, country, or global level? In 2021, Ukraine became the first country in the world to officially establish a Human Responsibility Day, which is recognized annually on October 19. This day symbolizes the aspiration of Ukrainians to grow and evolve on personal, social, and global scales. The experience of the full-scale war that began in 2022 has highlighted the resilience of Ukrainian society, communities, and organizations, showcasing their ability to adapt, innovate, and withstand challenging times. This experience has fostered an awareness of the values that have enabled the preservation of the state and its ongoing transformation through the establishment of democratic institutions, the development of diplomacy, and a vision for the future. Despite the challenges posed by war, Ukraine is maturing as a nation, guided by the principles of responsibility on personal, interpersonal, and national levels. We aspire for other nations to support and initiate Human Responsibility Day, emphasizing the importance of being a responsible individual in every facet of life. Human Responsibility Day is a space for dialogue, discussions, actions, and transformative change. Declaration of Human Responsibilities The Human Responsibility Day is based on the Declaration of Human Responsibilities , elaborated in 2014 by Bohdan Hawrylyshyn , a prominent Ukrainian economist, visionary, and philanthropist.
