CULTURALCAPITALINTROSPECTION [https://cci.co.ua/] Start Menu About Program Exhibitions Lectures Residence Votizdat ua en About I The Cultural Capital Introspection program 2019-2020 is the project of the Sorry No Rooms Available artist residency. SNRA located in the hotel Intourist-Zakarpattia, Uzhhorod, Ukraine. The program invites American artists and curators to produce their works and engage with a conversation about the future of artistic production and cultural institutions through the perspective of their practice. Uzhhorod is a border city in close proximity to Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Poland, and home to multiethnic communities. Within the past 100 years, Uzhhorod has been under the control of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Republic of Czechoslovakia, the USSR, and now is an independent Ukraine. The residency is based in hotel Zakarpattia which was built during the late 1970s in the soviet-brutalist architecture style as “Intourist” (foreign guests only) hotel and a KGB outpost. To this day it preserves an aura of the Soviet State and signs of its collapse, transporting travelers across times, cultures and political contexts. Like the hotel Zakarpattia, much of the cultural infrastructure of Ukraine has not been renovated since Soviet times. Indeed, despite Ukraine’s integration into other aspects of the Western European sphere of influence, the country stays largely uncharted territory for contemporary art institutions. We see this as an opportunity to think about new models of art institutions that are neither ghosts of Soviet modernization nor agencies of the globalized art market. The program invites all participants to engage with the cultural landscape of Uzhhorod and the Transcarpathia region re-envisioning conditions and trajectories of cultural systems and agency. The Cultural Cаpital Introspection Program is made possible with the support of the U. S. Embassy in Kyiv.
