While we’ve seen some shifts, they were considerably overshadowed by various crises, mostly stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. The global economic recession, the widespread crisis of democracy, and the constant disregard for the rule of law, as well as the lack of confidence in the old elites and the unpreparedness of new politicians: all these factors played into 2020 being a less than ideal year for structural and qualitative change. Opinion Ukraine’s Foreign Policy of 2020: Victories and Downfalls The COVID-19 pandemic changed the traditional agenda of international politics and the usual way in which states pursue their foreign policy interests. Throughout the year, attention was mostly focused on the waves of new infections and their social-economic consequences. The SBU followed this up and stated that it would verify the footage and search for possible signs of illegal activity. Since the incident became public, it has caused an uproar throughout Ukraine, with public warnings against separatism in Western Ukraine. The dispute between Hungary and Ukraine with regard to Hungarian minorities in the Transcarpathian region doesn’t need to be reinvigorated by another empty scandal that is based on disproportionate and overly emotional reactions. The Rearrengement of Political Forces after the 2020 Local Elections in Ukraine Local elections in Ukraine took place in rather difficult conditions: the coronavirus epidemic, a new electoral system, decentralization and a growing conflict between the center and the regions. Сounting votes and determining a clear “winner” in these elections turned out to be quite problematic. After election day, chaos ensued as nearly every large party started to claim victory. Counting votes and drawing the correct conclusions proved to be more difficult than in previous elections. The ICPS has therefore gathered all relevant data and applied the criteria for determining who actually is the winner of this year’s local elections. Opinion America: Avoiding Coyote Ugly "My fear was that I had gone to bed election night — actually about 3 a.m. — next to coyote ugly and that her name was Ms. America. I didn’t recognize her. She wore bright red lipstick, the color of a particular politician’s necktie. Nightmares eventually end. Mine did, maybe yours," Michael Willard, an American publicist, political analyst and CEO of the international PR-agency The Willard Group, reflected on the US presidential election.
