This is done on the basis of literary description of a character and his/her distinguishing features listed in the plot. During the creation, all the necessary developments are taken into account for further animation of the character (2D animation) or modeling and animation (3D animation). The process includes: sketches – quick graphic drawings (search for the character’s image); concept – finalized representation of a character in color; turnaround – fully drawn character from all angles (front, profile, three-quarters, back); distinguishing postures and gestures; articulation – a scheme of main positions for the character’s mouth according to the alphabet; emotion map – the main facial expressions of the character; color scheme (for classic drawn 2D animation) – a palette of character’s colors and their corresponding numbers for precision; light-and-shadow scheme (for classic drawn 2D animation) – location of light and own shadows on the character in different lighting conditions; map of materials (for 3D animation) – development of all materials for the character; map of elements – development of all details and accessories for the character (costume details and paraphernalia); hands – developing character’s hands; height table – character’s height in proportion with the other characters. Creating a set of graphic (black-and-white and color) drawings visualizing the main settings according to the plot and instructions in the written script. During the creation, all the necessary developments are taken into account for further work in 2D or 3D animation, that is: • sketches – quick graphic drawings in search of the image; • concept – color representation of a location with regard to the general mood and ambience; • master background – fully finalized drawing of a location, developed in detail for working backgrounds of the film to be created on its basis; • paraphernalia elements – detailed development of all location details for further work. Drawing the frames of key scenes in the film. Preliminary graphic visualization of the characters’ main actions according to the plot, as a sequence of drawings. The storyboard contains all the main information, i.e. scene numbers, their timing, camera movements, characters’ dialogues, actions to be performed by certain characters, VFX indications, etc. Creation of an animated storyboard, which is collected with regard to all cameras and timings for the storyboard. This gives a clear idea of how the film will look and enables one to see shot sizes, camera movement and combination of long and short takes for the editing. Creating classic drawn 2D animation: rough animation – creation of key postures for the character according to the task from the storyboard; clean-up – cleaning up rough animation with regard to the approved character models; inbetweening – creation of drawings connecting transfers between postures; painting all drawings according to the character palettes; compositing – final composition of the film. The process includes development of design, animation and VFX.
