Liquid RAW Treatment Plant is ready for operation
- 13 April 2018
The Chernobyl NPP came up for the final stage of commissioning of the Liquid Radioactive Waste Treatment Plant. The State Architectural and Construction Inspectorate of Ukraine (SACI) issued a license, which certifies that the LRTP is brought into line with modern construction norms and requirements.
In line with the Special permit for LRTP operation issued by the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine in December 2014, the above-mentioned certificate of the State Architectural and Construction Inspectorate of Ukraine (SACI) was a prerequisite for the commencement of LRTP operation. Due to the establishment of new construction norms and regulations, the issue of the certificate was delayed in 2014 until the completion of all the activities stipulated by new requirements. After renovation of the facility, during which fire protection and lightning protection systems were improved, and the building was made cold-proof, the Chernobyl NPP obtained a license of the SACI, and in the near future the Plant will start fulfilling its design tasks related to liquid RAW processing.
In addition, autonomous electric boilers and a steam generator have been installed at the LRTP. This will make it possible to evaporate RAW and reduce their amount by increasing salt concentration in the RAW.

Accounting Chamber of Ukraine considers the internal environment created at ChNPP to be reliable
- 11 April 2018
The financial and budgetary accountability of Chernobyl NPP as a whole ensures submission of reliable data on the budget revenues and spending at the ChNPP. This has been spoken about at a meeting of the Committee on Environmental Policy, Nature Resources Utilization and Elimination of the Consequences of Chornobyl Catastrophe, where the report of the Accounting Chamber of Ukraine (AChU) on the activity of SSE ChNPP was reviewed.
In particular, results of the audit, conducted by the AChU, have shown that all sums, both of the state target financing and international technical assistance, are in full reflected in the SSE Chernobyl NPP accounting.
“The targeted use of funds allocated from the state budget is ensured at the Plant. It completely meets the requirements of “Procedure for the transfer of contribution of Ukraine into the Chernobyl Shelter Fund” and “Procedure for the use of funds provided in the country’s budget for the safe maintenance of ChNPP Units and Shelter Object and implementation of measures on the preparation for decommissioning” – the report said.
The financial audit, conducted by the AChU, also revealed in the ChNPP financial reporting unessential errors and deviations that in aggregate amount to 0.01% of the balance sheet total. However, in the report it is emphasised that these shortcomings by no means falsify information about the general financial status of the enterprise.

ChNPP obtained a Certificate of Conformance for important equipment at ISF-2
- 06 April 2018
The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine issued a Certificate to the Chernobyl NPP, which certified the design of packaging set 700-001.720.14.00.00 for transportation of spent fuel assemblies (SFA) and spent additional absorbers (SAA) of RBMK-1000 reactors.
This set is an integral part of a transfer railcar TK-700 and is intended for loading, transportation and unloading of a transfer basket with 9 spent fuel assemblies or with a similar amount of spent additional absorbers with a total mass of up to 1,800 kilograms.
The packaging set 700-001.720.14.00.00 was designed by the Slavutich branch of State Enterprise "State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety", and manufactured at "Skoda" Plant (Czech Republic).
The Certificate was issued in accordance with the requirements of Article 6 of the Law of Ukraine “On Authorization Activity in Nuclear Energy Use” and the regulatory act "On the procedure of issuing certificates for safe transportation of radioactive materials”. It certifies that the design of the packaging set 700-001.720.14.00.00 and its radioactive content complies with the requirements established by the Rules for Nuclear and Radiation Safety during Transportation of Radioactive Materials.

Fire drill was held at the Shelter Object (NSC)
- 30 March 2018
The fire drill, in which operating staff of a shift of the Shelter Object (NSC) Operation Shop, Electrical Shop, Radiation Safety Shop, State Specialized Fire Department No.2, Military Unit No.3014, relevant subdivisions and plant shift supervisors were involved, as well as other personnel of SSE ChNPP and contracting organizations, was aimed at the real-time practice of personnel actions regarding taking the fire extinguishing system “Sukhotrub” off from the standby mode in winter into the fire-fighting mode at the facility. An important part of the drill was to develop skills of interactions between the Plant’s subdivisions, the military unit which is guarding the ChNPP, and fire emergency response units in case of potential fire at the facility.
As per the legend developed for this drill, the assumed fire occurred due to short circuit during the testing of ventilation units in premise No.401 of the NSC technological building – electric motors and cables flamed up. The assumed fire propagated fast over cable routes and damaged conditional equipment and cables within the technological building. The fire extinguishing system “Sukhotrub” was put into effect after the conditional suspension of works at the facility, evacuation of contracting staff from the technological building, de-energization of equipment, required switching of ventilation and some other required actions during a fire. The whole drilling process was accompanied by dosimetry control.

Visiting Chernobyl NPP has become much easier owing to the procedure simplification
- 20 March 2018
Now everyone who wishes can see the today’s work of ChNPP, decommissioning process and Shelter Object transformation into an environmentally safe system.
“ChNPP is becoming another facility of the Exclusion Zone, which anybody who wants will be able to visit. This will give a chance to visitors to get a full picture of the Plant’s work and projects being implemented within the industrial site. In view of this, we decided to follow the principle “A picture is worth a thousand words” — says Vitalii Petruk, Head of SAUEZM.
The main attention will be given to the safety measures for visitors who will be provided with all necessary personal protection equipment and pass the obligatory dosimetric control.
In the course of the visit visitors will be able to follow the trail of the Plant’s workers. Full dipping into the NPP’s atmosphere will be promoted even by the road to the facility as the visitors will get to the Plant from Slavutych by the same commuter train, by which the ChNPP workers head to work on a daily basis.
Exploration of the Plant’s work will start from the Check Point “Semykhody”, where the largest ChNPP change facility is located. After passing the control, visitors will be shown the today’s life of the Plant. The basic tour includes visiting many facilities: from emergency protective shelters to a local canteen. Guests will be able to have a look at the main rooms of Unit No.3, from which the reactor was operated, and to see the Unit’s systems as well. In addition, anybody who wants will be able to see the Shelter Object’s Integrated Automated Monitoring System (IAMS) in operation, which monitors the Object’s state these days; and to find out more about the New Safe Confinement (NSC).
SSE ChNPP Director General Igor Gramotkin emphasizes: “It must be remembered that the Chernobyl NPP continues to be a nuclear facility, and we in the same way as before strictly follow all safety requirements for similar enterprises. However, we are aiming to be maximally open and transparent, trying to minimize a number of barriers for visitors and release them from a complex scheme of visit approval. I strongly believe that such changes will become extra steps towards transformations in the country!”
