Technology A light-emitting diode (LED) is a light source of a radically different nature. It does not involve burning. In traditional incandescent light bulbs, a tungsten wire filament is heated by electricity, and the heat results in glowing. By contrast, a LED lamp does not involve heating, instead it directly converts electricity into light. A LED is in effect a crystal grown on a plate made of artificial sapphire. In order to make the crystal produce white light, it is coated with a special solution — the fluorescent dye. A 1 Watt LED bulb emits around 100 lumens of light. Prior to coming into the market, each LED is tested on test boards. If a LED has not burned out within 8 hours, it will reliably last for another 50,000 hours (15 years).
