Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tree from Southeast Asia, belongs to Rubiaceae, first time was described by the Dutch colonial scholar Korthals. This tree refers, in Botanical sense, to plants such as Corynanthe, Cinchona and Uncaria, because they are similar in the biochemical sense. Kratom is from the same family as Coffee tree and the psychoactive plant Psychotria viridis. Mitragyna’s leaves are used all over the World as medications, and the tree trunks – as materials in building sphere. For medical use Kratom was spread in the region of its growth, now it becomes quite famous in other parts of the world. In Southeast Asia fresh leaves are usually used to achieve a stimulating effect, and to get out of fatigue. In other places dried leaves are usually brewed as a tea or extracted with water. Kratom contains many alkaloids, including mitragynine – its main active substance, and 7-hydroxymitragynine, (7-OHM), which is currently estimated as the primary active substance. Although mitragynine in its structure is similar with yohimbine and tryptamines,but its pharmacology is quite different. Kratom powder has stimulating properties. It also contains alkaloids, which are the strong stimulants of the immune system. Kratom lowers blood pressure. Also there is a kratom epicatechin in it, a powerful antioxidant, which dark chocolate contains. Its beneficial properties are closely relative to the EGCG of green tea. Other alkaloids, which kratom leaves include are: raubasine (best known as Rauwolfia serpentina) and alkaloids from yohimbe – corynantheidine. Kratom relieves symptoms of withdrawal from alcohol, as kratom powder containes alkaloid – agonist of µ-receptors. It causes stronger analgesia even than the analgesia of morphine. In many countries people, suffering from cancer, instead of prescriptioned chemical pills, use extracts of kratom . The tea of mitragyna speciosa has analgesic and sedative effect. Kratom powder has slightly stimulating properties, resembling caffeine, without the side effects (such as palpitations, etc.), relieves chronic and light pain, helps concentrate on any activity, increases physical endurance. The duration of analgesic effect is about 7-9 hours, stimulating – 3-5 hours. It’s rather better to buy kratom and have a cup of tea, to be healthy, than to take a handful of pills and have side effects while taking them. Tea is better, than meds.
