The Batkivshchyna leader continues to call for a change in strategy and format of negotiations. “We can’t rely solely on the Minsk protocols. There needs to be a completely different strategy that includes in the negotiations Ukraine, the EU, USA – the countries that signed the Budapest Memorandum that guaranteed us peace and integrity of our borders when we gave up our nuclear weapons,” she said. Yulia Tymoshenko said that Ukraine is capable of defending itself against Russian aggression in Donbas if it gets support from the international community in the form of high-tech weapons. “We must do everything we can for Ukraine to get defensive weapons because Russian troops can go on the offensive at any moment and we won’t be able to defend ourselves,” the Batkivshchyna leader said. She also stressed the importance of economic and financial sanctions against Russia. “Unfortunately, on the diplomatic level we are not seeing intensive daily work to increase sanctions,” Yulia Tymoshenko said. “Furthermore, we still haven’t presented claims to Russia for the occupation of Crimea, and the confiscation of state property in Crimea occupied parts of Donbas,” she said. The Batkivshchyna leader also said that holding elections on occupied parts of Donbas is “hidden capitulation because the Kremlin’s people will be put in place and these territories will no longer be controlled by Ukrainian political forces.” “If elections are held in the LNR and DNR on October 18 without the rules and laws of Ukraine, this will be the final nail in the coffin for the Minsk agreements because occupation then ends with political control and the coming to power of the occupiers,” Yulia Tymoshenko said. The Batkivshchyna leader believes that Ukraine needs to take a stronger position in negotiations over Donbas. “Ukraine can not be an object in these processes. Ukraine must be a subject of the process, it must be the leader of all these processes,” Yulia Tymoshenko said.
