When people plan a vacation in a new country, they usually check at least the country’s Wikipedia page to learn some basic stuff about it, like population, languages, major cities, currency exchange rates and so on. If you’re not Ukrainian and attending IDCEE 2013 this week, I’d advise you do the same; but what also makes sense to know when going to a conference is what does the tech business and startup ecosystem of the host country look like.

Since its inception in 2010, Kiev’s IDCEE has asserted itself as the leading tech event for Central and Eastern Europe’s investors and startups. A rare phenomenon in such events, investors – coming from all parts of Europe and from as far away as the USA and India – come even more numerous than startup entrepreneurs. This year, the organizers expect some 2,500 participants to attend the event, including representatives from 150 startups and 300 investors with a total of $30 billion under management.

Once again this year, the annual IDCEE conference held in Kiev on October 18th and 19th attracted an impressive array of Internet oriented investors, startup entrepreneurs, and professionals of all kinds from far beyond Ukraine and the neighboring countries. A rare phenomenon in such events, investors – coming from all parts of Europe and as far away as the USA and India – were even more numerous than startup entrepreneurs.

The rich conference program covered a number of major issues percolating in today’s Internet and mobile industries. In a discussion on the future of e-commerce, moderated by East-West Digital News, prominent Russian and Ukrainian speakers said that their markets lacked maturity for social commerce or other novelties. So much remains to be built in the infrastructure for e-commerce in these countries, they noted, and many segments are still open to new players aiming to build classic e-commerce companies.
