Kostyuk Foundation

DECLARATION

Platon Grigorievich Kostyuk was a major contributor to the field of Physiology.

Platon Grigorievich created a large school of researchers working throughout the world.

We, his pupils, would like to commemorate his life and to continue in our small ways his work.

We put together our effort to create an organization with the goal of promoting Physiology in Ukraine, because it is fundamental for healthcare and medical research.

The name of the organization will be determined this year. One possible name under consideration is the Kostyuk Foundation.

Our activity will focus on stimulating young promising Ukrainian physiologists.

Each year, we will recognize one or two by presenting the Kostyuk Award.

The organization will function as a not-profit charitable foundation based on donations from pupils of Platon Grigorievich Kostyuk, from anyone who thinks that Platon Grigorievich Kostyuk impacted their life, and from anyone who wants to support the development of Physiology in Ukraine. The organization will be independently incorporated in the USA.

The Ukrainian Physiological Society and the Ukrainian Society for Neuroscience will host its web page and provide information support in Ukraine.

The donors will yearly elect the Board (5 members), which decides on any action of the organization, and two Treasurers (one in Europe and one in North America).

Physiologists working in Ukraine are invited to apply for consideration as candidates for the Kostyuk Award.

Candidates with PhD/Cand.Sci. degree received no longer than 10 years ago (counting from January 1 of the current award year) will be considered. They should present: a one page CV (in English), a one page personal statement about achievements and goals (in English), and recent (up to 3 years) publications or manuscripts accepted to print in any language. The documentation should be in electronic form.

The following selection criteria are applied:

a)           originality/innovativeness;

b)           shown ability to make most of available resources;

c)           significance of the idea;

d)           significance of obtained results;

e)           scientific merit of the applicant and publications.

Each category has a 5-level scoring (25 points total). Selection is done by vote among all donors. A donor may delegate her/his vote to the Board. If two candidates scored the same, they share the Award. If three or more candidates receive same scores, a run-out vote is organized.

The recipient(s) of the Kostyuk Award are recognized by presenting a commemorative plaque and a personal cash award, size of which is decided yearly by the Board.
