Sign up for Our Newsletter SIGN UP » Watch artist timelapse video Installed in July 2016 by Baltimore-based artist Nether, this mural pays homage to a group of young LGBTQ activists, called Check It, who are an all-gay and transgender gang from D.C. Upon its completion, Nether wrote the following about his new mural on Instagram:“This mural, titled ‘Stigma’, is part of an ongoing mural series that deals with perception and misunderstanding of the other in the urban environment.” The first official mural presented was created by artist Anthony Torcasio who’s work is best described as “a new style of artist expression” rooted in the spay can graffiti street scene of his childhood. PREVIOUS MURAL ARTISTS NDA dsd FEBRUARY 2016 The latest edition of the Fillmore Philly-Mural Arts partnership was installed in November 2016 by Diego Romero. In the artist’s own words: This mural is an homage to my grandfather Felix Devalois Romero-Acevedo and the elders in general as a reminder of how valuable they are in our lives, because without them we wouldn't be here. My grandpa and family are from Vieques, Puerto Rico (an island to the east side of PR), land from where they were evicted by the US Navy for bombing exercises. On the other hand the color patterns in this mural are symbols representative of peyote. In the cosmovision of the indigenous community known as Huicholes (from Wirikuta, Mexico) nature itself is full of ancestors and peyote is both an elder and medicine with teachings. The fusion of both these personal and cultural references means a way of protecting, unifying and honoring the heritage of the ancestors in our families and our connection to the land that gives us life.
