With a proud tradition in our beloved sport, Ukraine has become a genuinely global force in the world of boxing over recent years. At the AIBA World Boxing Championships Baku 2011, the country emerged as the strongest overall team, its competitors securing four golds and one silver medal, which was the biggest haul by any nation at one event in the history of AIBA Competitions. But that was only the beginning of the country’s recent success in the sport. Whilst getting results in the London 2012 Olympic Games may have proven difficult for some of the Ukraine’s sports teams, its boxing squad held firm, taking five medals. This officially made boxing the country’s most successful sport at the Games. Then Ukrainian boxers again proved their worth in Season III of the World Series of Boxing (WSB), where on just their debut season they defeated defending champions Dolce & Gabbana Italia Thunder in the semi-finals and pushed Astana Arlans Kazakhstan right to the wire in what was the closest WSB Team Finals to date. The match was almost certainly the most exciting and brilliant demonstration of boxing that the competition has ever seen. The Ukraine Otamans had a large part to play in creating such a closely fought event. In some ways then it is fitting that we should be here in Kiev to watch the next generation of boxers test their skills and continue their development as athletes on the highest stage of all. I would like to personally wish all the young competitors the best of luck and to remind them that their future is literally in their own hands. Much is about attitude. To have gotten this far, every single boxer here has already proven themselves to be a cut above their peers. Many will be the pride of their families’, friends and wider communities. Nonetheless, it is inevitable that some will have to endure the bitter taste of disappointment. So I would like to remind all our young athletes whether victorious or not at these Championships, that the route to success in boxing is a marathon, not a sprint. Moreover, when you step into the ring at this stage of your careers, you either win or you learn. Losing is not part of the equation. Good luck to you, your coaches, team delegates, referees & judges and all officials. Yours in boxing, Ching-Kuo Wu AIBA President Dear participants and boxing fans!
