Morning Update: White Sox hire Renteria; Bulls lose preseason opener Todd Frazier reached the 40-home run plateau on Wednesday night and now his eyes are trained on 100 RBIs. Frazier’s seventh-inning solo home run not only extended his hitting streak to 12 games, it provided the game’s only offense in a 1-0 White Sox victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in front of 12,976 at U.S. Cellular Field. Frazier became only the seventh player in franchise history to hit 40 homers in a season with his 394-foot drive off Rays pitcher Eddie Gamboa. The blast offered Miguel Gonzalez and David Robertson just enough support as they combined on a three-hit shutout. Robertson recorded his 37th save in 44 tries. “It’s a big deal any time a guy rounds off that number,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “It’s always a big deal for you. He’s been wanting to get there for a while. I don’t know if you guys know, but he’s been talking about it for a while. I know I’ve heard it a lot. He’s been aiming for that. He wants to get 40 and 100 and especially if it counts like it did tonight and gets a guy a win.” Frazier entered the game hitting .305/.374/.568 with six homers and 14 RBIs in September, easily his best month of the season. His homer came on a cold, windy night in which offense was at a premium. The game was delayed for 21 minutes by rain, which continued through the first inning. The rains came again in the bottom of the third inning and delayed the contest for another 76 minutes. Tampa’s third pitcher of the night, Gamboa’s 76-mph knuckleball caught too much of the plate and Frazier planted it about eight rows beyond the left-field bullpen with two outs in the seventh. “Not many people have hit 40 home runs in a year so it’s a good feat to have,” Frazier said. “It’s a great feat to have. I had a bunch of people text me ‘It’s coming. Today is the day.’ It wasn’t that much pressure. It was just a matter of knowing that it’s there and I’m glad to get it over with and now it’s on to another goal of mine.” Frazier has never driven in 100 runs in a season. His 98 RBIs this season are nine more than his previous career high of 89 that he set in 2015. Gonzalez hadn’t pitched into the ninth inning since he threw a four-hit shutout on Sept. 3, 2014. To get there he had to stay loose and sharp throughout the second delay of the night. Gonzalez threw twice during the delay, a total of 25 pitches in the indoor cage, and stretched to stay loose. But being his final start, Gonzalez wanted to take advantage of the opportunity. He returned after the delay and was remarkable. He had stretches where he retired eight in a row in the middle and nine straight into the ninth before he yielded a one-out single to Logan Forsythe. [SHOP: Gear up, White Sox fans! ] He allowed three hits, walked none and struck out five. Gonzalez threw strikes on 71 of 102 pitches. Robertson took over and needed only one pitch to record the save as Kevin Kiermaier grounded into a game-ending double play. “It’s been a while since I’ve been out there for the ninth inning,” Gonzalez said. “It took me two years to get there, but they were swinging early. I made some good pitches early on. Got some quick outs, that’s what you got me to the ninth inning. “Staying loose was really the most important thing for it. “I was mentally prepared. Obviously you can’t get away with it. It was my last start. I was going out no matter what and didn’t give in and the results were there.” Tags: Chicago White Sox , Miguel Gonzalez Miguel Gonzalez good again but White Sox fall to Royals Miguel Gonzalez good again but White Sox fall to Royals By Dan Hayes September 17, 2016 8:59 PM Latest White Sox Talk Former White Sox Conor Gillaspie plays unlikely hero for Giants in NL Wild Card win White Sox Talk Podcast: Will the White Sox trade Sale or Quintana? Morning Update: White Sox hire Renteria; Bulls lose preseason opener KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Miguel Gonzalez continues to look like he could be a valuable member of the White Sox rotation next season. Gonzalez made his 10th quality start in 11 tries on Saturday night, but the White Sox offense couldn’t solve the Kansas City Royals’ Jason Vargas/Dylan Gee combination in a 3-2 loss in front of 34,805 at Kauffman Stadium. Vargas and Gee combined to allow two runs in 7 1/3 innings and outpitch Gonzalez, who has a 2.70 ERA dating back to July 1. Catcher Kevan Smith recorded his first major league hit when he singled in the fifth inning in the losing effort. “Nothing you can do,” Gonzalez said. “It’s part of the game. It’s a game of inches. I made some good pitches. Really the fifth inning was the one that got me. I got a little tired, had to work a little bit more. Smitty did a really good job back there, I’m really happy for him, he got his first hit in the big leagues.” Signed at the last minute for depth, Gonzalez has been anything but over the past 2 1/2 months. The addition of the cut-fastball has helped Gonzalez get inside on left-handed hitters more easily and makes him a viable option for the White Sox going forward. Kansas City still did get to Gonzalez for three runs, including a pair in the decisive fifth inning. Alcides Escobar tripled to right to start the inning and scored on Hunter Dozier’s single to give the Royals a 2-1 lead. Eric Hosmer also singled in a run to put his team ahead by two. But that was all Gonzalez would surrender in a 104-pitch effort. He allowed three earned runs and six hits in seven innings. The only outing by Gonzalez since July 1 that wasn’t a quality start was on Aug. 11 when he left a start after only one inning with an injury. [SHOP: Get your White Sox gear right here ] The White Sox took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Melky Cabrera RBI single to center off Vargas, who pitched for the first time all season. Avisail Garcia appeared to have the White Sox in line for more, but Whit Merrifield made a diving stop on a two-out grounder to prevent a run-scoring hit and end the inning. “We had opportunities,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “That was a nice play up the middle. We had something rolling there. You would like to get a little more out of it, but defensively they are pretty good. That kid plays all over the place and he does a pretty good job.” The White Sox wouldn’t mount another threat until the eighth inning. Two one-out singles knocked Gee out of the game and Joakim Soria took over. Garcia’s one-hopper with two outs took a strange bounce off third base and went for an RBI double as the White Sox got to within a run. But Soria retired pinch hitter J.B. Shuck on a grounder to short to strand the tying and go-ahead runs. Wade Davis pitched a perfect ninth inning to close it out for the Royals. Morning Update: White Sox hire Renteria; Bulls lose preseason opener MINNEAPOLIS — Miguel Gonzalez could return to the White Sox next week after he made a rehab start on Thursday afternoon. Though Gonzalez might need another short bullpen session, manager Robin Ventura thinks the right-hander is close to being activated off the disabled list. Gonzalez, who suffered a strained right groin on Aug. 11, threw 74 pitches in a start at Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday. He allowed six earned runs and 11 hits in 4 1/3 innings, striking out seven. “He should be all right,” Ventura said. “I don’t think he’s going to make another one necessarily down there. He could have a short one, but I expect him back at a certain point and to insert him somewhere next week.” [SHOP: Grab your own White Sox gear here ] Elsewhere on the injury front, general manager Rick Hahn said infielder Brett Lawrie continues to work toward his return from a leg injury at the team’s Camelback Ranch facility in Glendale, Ariz. With minor league seasons ending soon, Lawrie will play in games at instructional camp once he’s ready, Hahn said. Relief pitcher Jacob Petricka stopped by Target Field to visit his teammates. Petricka, who hails from Minnesota, just returned from Arizona on Saturday as he continues to rehab from surgery to repair a hip impingement. Petricka is expected to be ready by next spring.
