Narvaez impressing White Sox MLB Power Rankings: American League playoff races coming into focus KANSAS CITY -- Tim Anderson nearly had the game-winning hit on Wednesday night and turned in a nice pair of defensive plays. But the White Sox rookie also struck out five times and has struggled early in August. With that in mind, manager Robin Ventura dropped Anderson from the leadoff spot to seventh in the White Sox order on Thursday. Ventura hopes it helps alleviate some of the pressure Anderson perhaps has felt to perform. Anderson has produced a .434 OPS in seven games in August. “He’s a young kid, against the lefty he has a pretty good chance,” Ventura said. “But you want to also get him down there where he doesn’t have to feel like a leadoff hitter all the time. “That’s probably getting to him a little being up there wanting to make things happen. He had a good at bat last night, it wasn’t hit hard but it gets the job done.” [SHOP: Gear up, White Sox fans! ] The White Sox have said all along they like how Anderson handles himself in tough spots. Outfielder J.B. Shuck said Anderson’s attitude never changed when he experienced his toughest month as a pro in April at Triple-A Charlotte. Even though Anderson struck out five times in seven at-bats on Wednesday, Ventura thinks he has the ability to shake it off. “ It is a tough night and he could have come out feeling good, he fisted one over first base,” Ventura said. “But mentally he’s a tough kid that’s going to be able to handle it.” Tags: Chicago White Sox , Tim Anderson Tim Anderson returns to White Sox lineup, Adam Eaton hits third again Tim Anderson returns to White Sox lineup, Adam Eaton hits third again By Vinnie Duber August 06, 2016 4:30 PM Latest White Sox Talk White Sox Road Ahead: Will Narvaez see more playing time? Narvaez impressing White Sox MLB Power Rankings: American League playoff races coming into focus Tim Anderson returned to the White Sox lineup, missing just one game after getting hit in the hand with a pitch during Thursday’s game in Detroit. Anderson sat out Friday’s series-opener against the visiting Baltimore Orioles at U.S. Cellular Field but was back at the top of manager Robin Ventura’s lineup for Saturday’s game. Anderson’s hand healed enough that he could grip a bat and squeeze his glove at shortstop. “(Friday) I was just in the training room, just about from the time I got here up until gametime, and I got in pretty early today,” Anderson explained. “I got in the training room today and went out and swung, and I feel fine. “Yesterday, I couldn't grip (the bat), but today was the day where I could grip it real good.” Friday, Anderson had a large wrap on his hand, and Ventura reported his shortstop couldn’t grip a bat. But those problems were gone Saturday, with Anderson saying his hand was at about 90-percent health. “He can hold onto the bat,” Ventura said. “You just get a little concerned, I think, when he goes out there and he can’t hold the bat properly. Even the other day, diving back into first, you get nervous about putting him out there and hurting something else. He feels ready to go, and you can get him back in there.” Certainly Anderson getting drilled in the hand Thursday had the White Sox and their fans holding their collective breath. X-rays came back negative, prompting a sigh of relief, but it was yet another stroke of bad luck for a White Sox rookie this season. Four rookies have already suffered serious injuries: Kevan Smith, Jason Coats, Matt Davidson and Charlie Tilson. The White Sox are just happy Anderson didn’t become the latest to sustain that kind of injury. “Yeah, it is kind of scary, but I kind of had a feeling that it wasn't anything serious,” Anderson said. “It was just sore. In 2014, I got hit on the wrist and broke my wrist, and it wasn't that same feeling. “I kind of knew it wasn't as bad as then.” With Anderson healthy enough to return to the lineup, Ventura deployed a similar strategy to the one he did Thursday in Detroit: Anderson hitting leadoff, Melky Cabrera batting second and Adam Eaton hitting third. “The other day we put it in there, it seemed to work pretty good with TA at the top, he can run a little bit. And you get Melky there, as well. And you surround those guys with some different people,” Ventura said. “It also just looks different, and I think for those guys, they seem to like it the way it lines up. “We did it the other day in Detroit, and when TA got hit, that changed that somewhat. So we’re going to run it out there again.” Tags: Chicago White Sox , Tim Anderson Tim Anderson hopes to be back in White Sox lineup Saturday Tim Anderson hopes to be back in White Sox lineup Saturday By Vinnie Duber August 05, 2016 5:35 PM Latest White Sox Talk White Sox Road Ahead: Will Narvaez see more playing time? Narvaez impressing White Sox MLB Power Rankings: American League playoff races coming into focus Tim Anderson said he hopes to be back in the White Sox lineup by Saturday. It might take him that long to get all the bandaging off his hand. The X-rays came back negative after Anderson was hit in the hand with a pitch during Thursday’s 6-3 win over the Tigers in Detroit. But there is some soreness and swelling, according to the White Sox young shortstop and manager Robin Ventura. Talking to Anderson, there’d be no way to tell with that giant wrap on his hand. "I feel a lot better today. It's just a little sore today," Anderson said. "It was really bad. I was very sore yesterday." Ventura’s update provided a few more details that might raise an eyebrow or two in the wake of Anderson’s positive prognosis, though the manager said Anderson could even play in a pinch Friday. "He’s sore," Ventura said. "You can tell that he got hit. There’s some swelling there, can’t grip the bat all that great, but he can do it if there’s an emergency. You’re just a little concerned him going out there and doing something that would jeopardize some other part of his body. So we’re going to let him rest a little bit, and hopefully that (swelling) goes down and he’s better by tomorrow." Ventura also said the time off due to injury will allow Anderson — who’s played in all but one game since his major league debut on June 10 — to get a little rest. "The injury is more why he’s not playing not anything else," Ventura said, "but there is a double meaning to it where he can get a little rest and get back after it once he feels good." If all goes well, Anderson will miss just one game, but that doesn’t change the fact that his injury is the latest in a stunningly long line of maladies that have plagued White Sox rookies this season. Kevan Smith, Matt Davidson, Jason Coats and Charlie Tilson all preceded Anderson with injuries, those four far more serious than Anderson’s ball off the hand. "Yeah, it's kind of scary," Anderson said. "I was able to get past the first game, so that was a good thing." "That’s something new, and I think a lot of guys have talked about that because we’ve got nothing else to talk about," veteran outfielder Adam Eaton joked. "It’s been kind of crazy. It’s something all those guys would say they didn’t prepare to get hurt in their debut or get hurt in a recall or whatever. Tough go at it. I feel bad for them and their families. They get up here, and they’re excited, wanting to make a good impression right away. And having a setback like they’ve had, I hope they in the rehab learn from their trials and it makes them better come spring training." Anderson is hitting .264/.275/.398 in 47 games this season with five home runs and 12 RBIs.
