The campaign culminated with Clear the Shelters day on Saturday, July 23, with more than 20,000 adoptions on that day alone, a figure surpassing the number of pet adoptions from last year’s total inaugural effort. That same day, more than a dozen shelters were literally emptied out. Combined with 2015’s inaugural campaign, the Clear the Shelters effort has resulted in more than 65,000 pet adoptions. Clear the Shelters is spearheaded by NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations, a division of NBCUniversal. This year, more than 50 NBC and Telemundo stations teamed up with nearly 700 animal shelters from across the United States and Puerto Rico. Sponsored by Petco, VIP Petcare and the ASPCA (the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). Thousands of families were inspired to adopt pets, and on Clear the Shelters day, July 23, people could rescue a homeless animal at either no-cost or at a reduced fee.
