Aluminum alloy wheels (also known as alloy wheels), have some serious advantages over steel wheels – they are lighter, dissipate heat better and provide good rigidity under high-load cornering maneuvers. There are three basic types of alloy wheel construction: forged, billet and cast. Back in the day, performance wheels were called mag wheels, which was short for magnesium – one of the primary components of wheel design at that time. In the years since, magnesium has been largely replaced by aluminum. The less weight, the easier it is for the engine to turn the wheel and the easier it is for the suspension to control wheel and tire movements. 3 TYPES OF WHEELS Forged: Intense heat and/or pressure transforms a solid slug of aluminum material into the final shape of a wheel. Billet: Machined from a solid chunk, or "billet," of material. Cast: Molten aluminum is poured into a permanent mold and allowed to cool. REFINED MATERIALS TRD metals have a refined grain structure, which makes a strong product. TRD wheels try to optimize the strength to weight rations by putting the material (aluminum) in the right place.
