The 49ers on Thursday signed linebacker Wynton McManis, who went undrafted after a four-year career at the University of Memphis. McManis signed the required three-year contract for an undrafted rookie.

To make room for McManis on the 49ers’ 90-man roster, the club waived undrafted rookie Kevin Anderson of Stanford.

McManis appeared in 47 games and recorded 110 tackles and three sacks during his college career while playing outside linebacker.

However, McManis' size (6 foot 1, 225 pounds) might make him a better fit at inside linebacker, where the 49ers have a thin group that includes only NaVorro Bowman, Michael Wilhoite, Gerald Hodges, Shayne Skov and Nick Bellore.
