He's seeing the ball and is in a good spot.'' - John Farrell on Hanley Ramirez. * "I think it speaks to their preparedness. Guys are coming to play every night. The pre-game routine that each guy goes through gets them to that point.'' - Farrell on the Red Sox' habit of scoring early in games. * "We haven't seen many lefty starters. Once we start running into more, I think this team will get into a groove more than we have.'' - Travis Shaw on the team breaking out against lefthanded pitching. * "There's something very, very special going on right now. It's not only one guy. It's from the top to the bottom. We just have to keep it rolling.'' - Hanley Ramirez on the Red Sox' offensive outburst. * "When I went out to warm up, I looked down and saw "Red Sox' across my chest. I thought, 'This is pretty cool man. How many people get to say they get to start a game for the Red Sox in Fenway?' That was pretty surreal.'' - Sean O'Sullivan on making his first career Fenway start. NOTES: * The Red Sox have homered in 12 straight games, with nine homers in the last three. * Jackie Bradley's single in the fifth extended his hitting streak to 16 games. * Junichi Tazawa was charged with a throwing error in the eighth, just the second Red Sox error in the last nine games. * Travis Shaw had two hits in 25 at-bats against lefties before Tuesday, but two more hits (double, homer) in his first three at-bats -- both against lefties. * Boston has a five-game winning streak at home, its longest since 2014. * Mookie Betts' first two hits off lefthanded pitching this season were homers. * Each of Travis Shaw's last six homers have come with at least one baserunner on base. STARS: 1) Travis Shaw Forget about Shaw's troubles with lefties. He snapped out with a two-run double and a three-run homer off southpaws, then later added a single off a righty for a three-hit night, topped by five RBI. 2) Hanley Ramirez Ramirez hit a moon shot in the first, a homer into the Monster Seats in left-center that was measured at nearly 470 feet. Ramirez reached base two more times with two singles and a walk. 3) Sean O'Sullivan The journeyman made his first start for the Red Sox a good one – at least for the first five innings, blanking the A's. He seemed to run out of gas in the sixth when they roughed him up for four runs, but by then, the game was well in hand. As a spot starter taking the spot forfeited by Henry Owens, O'Sullivan threw strikes, worked quickly and kept the ball out of the middle of the plate -- for the first five innings at least, when he blanked the A's while his teammates piled up runs for him. The fourth time through the order in the sixth, it got a little messy as O'Sullivan gave up four runs in five innings, but by then, it was largely academic. * Travis Shaw solved lefties for a night. Coming into the game, Shaw was just 2-for-25 against lefthanders, but he broke out against Oakland starter Sean Manaea, doubling home two runs in the five-run third inning. Two innings later, facing lefty reliever Daniel Coulombe, Shaw struck again, homering to left for a three-run blast. Two at-bats, six total bases and five RBI. What problem was that again? * Who's the impostor playing center field? For the second straight night, Jackie Bradley misplayed a ball in the outfield. On Monday night, he had a routine fly ball clang off the heel of his glove for his first error of the season. On Tuesday, he misjudged a line drive hit directly at him, allowing the ball to skip past him to the warning track. The play was ruled a double for Billy Butler, though Bradley should have been charged with another error. * You get the sense that Hanley Ramirez is just starting to warm up offensively. In the first 24 games, Ramirez had just one homer; in the last 11, he's hit three. The one he hit last night was absolutely smoked. STATCAST has its exit velocity at 114 mph and measured the distance at 468 feet, making it the second-longest homer in baseball this season. Moreover, Ramirez has knocked in 11 runs in his last 14 games. * The long ball is back in vogue. Tuesday marked the third straight game that the Sox hit multiple homers. They had four Sunday night in the Bronx, two more Monday night and three Tuesday, giving them nine over the last three games. They also have homered in 11 straight games, their longest such streak since 2011 when they homered in 12 games in a row from July 26-Aug. 6.
