The station, which was originally known as KEYL and later briefly became KGBS, was the second to go on air in San Antonio. When it was purchased by the Express-News Company in late 1954, the call letters were permanently changed to KENS, which stood for 'K-Express-News-Station.' The newspaper and TV station were bought by Harte-Hanks Communications in 1962, and KENS was part of Harte-Hanks for decades before being sold to Belo Corp. in 1997 and then to Gannett Corp. in 2013. Gannett spun its publishing properties from its broadcast and digital properties in 2015, making KENS5 part of TEGNA Media, one of the largest most geographically diverse broadcasters in the U.S. KENS 5 is building on a decades-long tradition as the news leader in San Antonio.
