Crumb’s inaugural exhibition at the gallery in London, featuring drawings from his Art & Beauty magazines. Initially published in 1996, the artist recently completed the highly anticipated third volume in the series, and the show marks the largest presentation of the project to date. Events happening the week of: « Previous Month « Previous Week Next Week » Next Month » "Portrait" Explores How 5 Different Artists Define Their Subjects The connection between you and the portrait is a personal one. What is a portrait, after all, but a story of another, guided through interpretation. It represents an ideal that the power of portraiture in a gifted artist’s hand can impose constraint on a moment of fragility. The magic is that, real or imagined, the subject of the portrait is the real author of the story, yet perhaps not of their faces. April 21, 2016 A Life in Letterpress On April 21, the fantastic Pick Me Up Graphic Arts Festiva l opens at London's Somerset House, and there is a fantastic program of some top design and small print houses who showcase their work. We have been a few times, and it really is one of our favorite annual exhibitions. This year, Pick Me Up will highlight Alan Kitching with A Life in Letterpress , "a major retrospective exhibition of Alan Kitching’s life and work at the forefront of typographical design." April 21, 2016 The Essence of Surf: Archiv-e @ Chandran Gallery, SF Tom Adler's T. Adler Books imprint has been one of the most beautiful publishers making books today. Mostly focusing on surf culture and other outdoor lifestyle-focused topics, Adler and publishing partner Evan Backes opened the Archiv-e photo print project as an aesthetic extension of the books, and now they are bringing Archiv-e to San Francisco for an exhibition at Chandran Gallery. The show is paired with Jay Nelson and Rachel Kaye's exhibition, Pairing #2. April 20, 2016 George Condo's "ENTRANCE TO THE VOID" A lot of the pop-culture audience learned of George Condo's work through his artwork around Kanye West's "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" album , a superb commission by West that showed his range in contemporary art. But for some of us, it was just another brilliant output by Condo, an artist that captured portrait art in a unique and, at times, twisted way. His newest show, Entrance to the Void , that just opened at Spruth Magers in Los Angeles , was created during Condo's battle with cancer, and subsequently, as he told the Guardian , “I was just freaking out doing these paintings. I was in five different places in my mind at the same time.” April 20, 2016 Utopias of the Street @ Somerset House, London Somerset House continues to have a brilliant program, with a lot of it centered around really delving into interesting angles revolving music ( PJ Harvey ), graphic design ( see the upcoming Pick Me Up show ), and now the urban arts. They are collaborating with arts organization A(by)P to present Venturing Beyond: Graffiti and the Everyday Utopias of the Street. As part of ‘UTOPIA 2016: A Year of Imagination and Possibility’ the exhibition explores unsanctioned public art – or graffiti – as an intrinsically utopian practice. April 20, 2016 Pairing #2: Jay Nelson & Rachel Kaye San Francisco has been re-emerging with some very strong art projects, galleries, and new gallery locations in the past 12 months, and Chandran Gallery will continue the trend with a site-specific, two-story installation by former Juxtapoz featured artist Jay Nelson and fine artist Rachel Kaye. April 19, 2016 Jules de Balincourt "Stumbling Pioneers" Jules de Balincourt has long put his signature style on the contemporary art world, with museum shows and solos at some of the contemporary scene's best galleries. We were lucky enough to check into Jules's studio this past early Fall to see what he was working on, but the bulk of this work was created upon his return to Los Angeles, the city where he grew up. Now his new show, Stumbling Pioneers, is up at Victoria Miro in London through May 14. April 18, 2016 Cristina Vergano "Then and Now" @ Leonard Tourné Gallery Born and raised in Italy, Cristina Vergano is known for her paintings that blend a classical style with fantastical, surrealistic content containing layers of meaning. Author Gail Leggio said of her work, “All of Vergano’s subjects—human, animal or hybrid—project warmth and intelligence; a spark of soulfulness emanates from their eyes.
