The term “creative genius” is often misused, but in the case of Whedon it may in fact be an understatement. This screenwriter/producer/director/composer/sometimes actor has created a world of success over the past two decades, including television series Buffy , Ange l and Firefly , the web series Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and comic book franchises like Fray . More recently, Whedon wrote and directed Marvel’s film adaptation of The Avengers , which currently sits as the 3 rd highest grossing film of all time. MAGNETISM As so many of his projects have rabid cult followings, Joss is seen as a bit of a god in the rapidly growing Comic-Con world. Joss Headon is worshiped by nerds the world over, especially since the huge success of The Avengers . SUCCESS Joss Whedon is currently one of the most well-respected and sought-after writer-directors in the world. He can lay claim to being largely responsible for The Avengers , which was quite simply one of the most profitable blockbusters in the history of cinema. At this point, Joss can more or less punch his own ticket in Hollywood. He currently has a handful of projects in development, including the highly anticipated sequel to The Avengers . Joss Whedon Biography Born in New York City in 1964, Joss is often described as the world’s first third-generation TV writer. His father, Tom Whedon, was a writer for The Golden Girls in the ‘80s, and his grandfather, John Whedon, was a writer for The Donna Reed Show in the ‘50s. His mother, a creative woman in her own right, was an unpublished novelist. The business is literally in Joss’s blood. In 1987, Joss graduated from Wesleyan University, a private liberal arts college in Middletown, Connecticut. Before attending Wesleyan, he spent two years abroad studying at Winchester College in Hampshire, England. He wrote and acted throughout college. After graduating and moving to Los Angeles, Whedon got his first official Hollywood gig when he was hired as a staff writer for the television series Roseanne . JOSS’S FIRST FILM, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER , IS RELEASED Buffy The Vampire Slayer, a film Joss wrote but didn’t direct, was released in 1992. It received a mixed critical reception, but was a moderate success at the box office. Though one might assume that the film’s production was something that Whedon should have been ecstatic about, the reality is that he was anything but. The director, Fran Rubel Kuzui, took the film in an entirely different direction from what Whedon had originally hoped for. His screenplay depicted a story far darker than what the movie ultimately portrayed. BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER: TAKE TWO Unsatisfied with how his vision of Buffy was tweaked and, in his opinion, watered down for the big screen, Josh decided to revive the concept as a television series with the same name. Buffy The Vampire Slayer , which ran for five seasons on The WB, was both a cult hit and critical darling. The series, which was about vampires before vampires were cool, even earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series in 2000. GOODBYE BUFFY , HELLO ANGEL On the heels of Buffy ’s success, Angel , a spin-off series starring David Boreanaz, debuted in 1999 and ran for five seasons of its own. The series featured Boreanaz in the titular role of Angel, a character who had been Buffy’s vampire-with-a-soul ex-boyfriend. The show further endeared Whedon to his diehard fan base. DR. HORRIBLE’S SING-ALONG BLOG Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is a 2008 musical miniseries that Whedon produced exclusively for the internet. When the Writers Guild of America went on strike in 2007/08, Joss, along with his two brothers, wanted to circumvent the issues surrounding the strike by creating something small and inexpensive, yet professionally done. The result was Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog , which has since gone on to become a cult sensation. The miniseries tells the story of Dr. Horrible, played by Neil Patrick Harris, and how he shares a love interest with his archenemy, Captain Hammer, played by frequent Whedon collaborator Nathan Fillion. In recent months there’s been talk of a sequel or maybe even a feature film followup. THE AVENGERS In April 2010, it was confirmed that Whedon would direct The Avengers , a live-action adaptation of Marvel‘s comic book superhero team of the same name. The film premiered on April 11, 2012, and it gross $1 billion worldwide within 19 days of its release, setting the record for biggest opening weekend of all-time.
