Survey Says ...Yes, Please How Microsoft's Nokia Acquisition Makes It More Like Apple Sep 03, 2013 10:56 AM EST Comments By Michael J. Miller Microsoft's announcement that it is purchasing the mobile phone division of Nokia will undoubtedly be a game changer in the mobile phone industry given Nokia's historic position in the market and Microsoft's ambitions. But for Windows Phone to emerge as a true third mobile alternative as opposed to an increasingly irrelevant afterthought, the combined company will have to move much more rapidly and become much more open-minded about changes. Miller Let's start with the bottom line: The Nokia Lumia 1020 takes the best pictures I've ever seen from a relatively thin smartphone. I've been using the phone for the past 10 days or so and in many situations it did such a good job that I didn't need to carry my digital camera. Jul 12, 2013 7:47 AM EST Comments By Michael J. Miller After just testing about the Nokia Lumia 928 Windows Phone, I was excited to attend Nokia's launch of the new Lumia 1020 yesterday, which was completely focused around the phone's 41-megapixel camera and the new imaging features it enables. Miller I've been trying out a Nokia Lumia 928 lately, and while it's pretty much the same as the Lumia 920, which I've reviewed before, it does have a few interesting differences. It's lighter, with a OLED display instead of an LCD, and has some changes to the camera as well. It's the top-of-the-line Windows Phone—at least until Thursday's rumored announcement of the 1020—but on Verizon, not AT&T. Miller CEO Stephen Elop introduced Nokia's new flagship phone, the Lumia 920, today. He showed off the 4.5-inch phone with new features, including a better camera system called Pureview with optical image stabilization, improved mapping, advanced display technology, and built-in wireless charging. "We are creating the most personal smartphone system," Elop said, and Lumia will be "the world's most innovative smart phone." The company has not announced specific dates or prices, but revealed the phones will be introduced in select markets in quarter four. (I wish we had more details, including carriers, but they weren't forthcoming.) Miller Having spent more quality time with the Nokia Lumia 900 this weekend, I remain convinced the Windows Phone operating system has huge potential. Here is what Microsoft and the phone vendors need to do to take it to the next level. Miller The Nokia Lumia 900, which officially launches Sunday, is being hailed as the first real "hero phone" for Microsoft's Windows Phone platform. While the attention is undoubtedly good for both Nokia and Microsoft, I wonder whether the phone itself lives up to that appellation.
