Showcase is the NBA Development League’s annual in-season scouting event, when all 19 D-League teams converge in one city to play in front of NBA general managers and player personnel executives from all 30 NBA teams. The 2016 event – Jan. 6-10 in Santa Cruz, Calif. – marks the 12th NBA D-League Showcase, featuring 19 games over five days. Why is it important? Showcase gives the nearly 200 players on NBA D-League rosters a chance to shine in hopes of achieving their dream: landing an NBA contract. It coincides with the period of the season when NBA teams can sign free agents to 10-day contracts, which begins on Jan. 5 this year. The majority of players in the NBA D-League are free agents who can be signed by any NBA team ( click here to learn more about how rosters are built ), so a flurry of deals typically occurs during and after Showcase each year; last season, a record 47 NBADL prospects earned 10-day NBA contracts, including four during Showcase and nine more in the two weeks following the event. In all, 35 players have been called during or immediately after the last 11 Showcases. Where does it take place? Showcase 2016 will be held in Santa Cruz, Calif., home of the Santa Cruz Warriors, for the second straight year. “Surf City” is located about 70 miles south across the bay from Oakland, home of the affiliate Golden State Warriors. Past hosts include Reno, Nev., Columbus, Ga., Fayetteville, N.C., Sioux Falls, S.D., Boise, Idaho and South Padre Island, Texas. Which players have appeared in past Showcases? A host of up-and-coming NBA players have put their skills on display at Showcase over the past 11 years, especially since NBA teams often assign young talent to the Development League at this time. Last year, Houston Rockets first-round pick Clint Capela put his skills on display with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, earning a First Team All-Showcase selection before making an impact in the NBA Playoffs and beyond. Two years before that, the Vipers’ center was a 23-year-old named Hassan Whiteside. Other past participants include: Jazz center Rudy Gobert, Hornets guard Jeremy Lin, Heat guard/forward Gerald Green, Rockets guard Patrick Beverley and forward Terrence Jones, Celtics forward Amir Johnson and Kings guard Seth Curry. What’s new in 2016? The second-ever Showcase Cup will be awarded at the 12th installment of the event, but this year’s format comes with a twist. After hosting an eight-team tournament in 2015, the 2016 champion will be determined based on 1) win-loss record and, in the event of a tie, the advanced statistic Net Rating* (*Net Rating is calculated by subtracting Defensive Rating from Offensive Rating. Offensive Rating is calculated by dividing a team’s total points by its total offensive possessions, while Defensive Rating is derived by dividing a team’s total points allowed by its opponent’s total offensive possessions. The Bakersfield Jam, affiliate of the Phoenix Suns, won the first-ever Showcase Cup in Santa Cruz last year.
