It was founded by prominent botanist of the XIX century Christian Steven. The aim of the establishment of the Gardens was to direct the intensive development of southern horticulture on the base of introduction, acclimatization, selection and distribution of southern fruit crops, flowers, ornamental, new industrial, medical and other useful plants, studying and active using of local vegetation resources. From the very beginning the founder of the Gardens established the stability business and scientific contacts with leading botanical institutions in Europe, Asia and America for enrichment of agriculture with new plants. That allowed collecting here the unique collections of species, varieties and forms of different crops. Nikitsky Botanical Gardens – National Scientific Centre of National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine is the founder of such national economy’s branches as southern ornamental gardening, southern and subtropical fruit gardening and viticulture, essential oil-bearing plants growing and tobacco-growing. Today NBG-NSC belongs to the most famous in the world botanical institutions, having the largest collections of genefund of valuable plants. NBG-NSC is the only owner of the specific and varietal diversity of southern fruit crops included more than 11000 varieties of peach, apricot, cherry-plum, fig, pomegranate, olive, ziziphus, sweet cherry and persimmon. The unique collections of ornamental woody and grassy plants, flowers and essential oil-bearing plants have been collected here. The unique Arboretum has brought the world popularity to the Gardens, being the visiting-card of botanical science of Ukraine for millions of tourists from our country and abroad, for specialists, scientists, plant-growers. The collections of woody plants from world’s flora occupy the area about 40 ha. Arboretum of NBG-NSC has always been and will be the object of paramount importance. In December, 2001 Arboretum of NBG-NSC got the status of National Property of Ukraine and in September, 2009 the Crimean collection from the Herbarium of NBG-NSC got the same status. Today NBG-NSC is the leading institution in Ukraine in ornamental gardenin g.
