Band members have voted him out, while electing a new council. For thirty years, outgoing chief Paul Sam presided over a reserve with currently only 87 people living within its boundaries. He pulled in over $202,413 tax-free last year, according to figures that are now public . His ex-wife, one of two other councillors on the band council, earned $202,000. Tim Eugene will be one of three people making up the new council. “There are a lot of tears at the band office. A lot of people can’t believe his legacy is over. He had every opportunity to make a good name for his band. But it didn’t work out that way. That’s what happens when you have a lack of communication with your people.” While the chief and his ex-wife earned salaries that the Canadian Taxpayers Federation calculated to be higher than any political leader in Canada, many people on the reserve live without electricity and running water. And Eugene says there hasn’t been a band council meeting in eight years. “There are a lot of people who are unhappy with the election results. But I’m pretty sure they will be happy going forward. They can look forward to a positive future. There’s been too much negative brought up in the past.” It’s largely due to the new federal First Nations Financial Transparency Act that band members discovered just how much their chief made. A new chief will be chosen among the newly-elected councillors. ]]> http://www.news1130.com/2014/11/07/highly-paid-chief-loses-position-on-shuswap-band-council/feed/ 1 http://www.news1130.com/2014/11/07/warcraft-filmmakers-tease-video-game-adaptation-at-fan-centric-blizzcon-expo/ http://www.news1130.com/2014/11/07/warcraft-filmmakers-tease-video-game-adaptation-at-fan-centric-blizzcon-expo/#comments Fri, 07 Nov 2014 22:47:00 -0800 Derrik J. Jones was on hand at the Anaheim Convention Center with “Warcraft” visual effects supervisor Bill Westenhofer to hype the upcoming film from Legendary and Universal Pictures. They were later joined on stage by “True Blood” and “Pacific Rim” actor Rob Kazinsky, who was wielding a replica of the behemoth Doomhammer weapon. Kazinsky is playing the orc warrior Orgrim in the film. “We’re fans,” said Kazinsky. “We wanted it to be right. It would absolutely murder me if this thing sucked.” The director, a longtime “World of Warcraft” player who previously created the films “Source Code” and “Moon,” was quick to note the “Warcraft” movie will keep the focus on the conflict between orcs and humans, which was depicted in the original “Warcraft” games from the 1990s. “It’s got so many stories,” said Jones. “‘World of Warcraft’ has been going for 10 years, ‘Warcraft’ itself has been going for 20 years. Our challenge was to drill down and find a story that would work as a single film.” During the panel, Jones announced the cast members and what roles they’ll be playing in the film, scheduled for release March 2016 On the human-led Alliance side, “Vikings” star Travis Fimmel will portray protagonist Anduin Lothar; Dominic Cooper has been cast as King Llane Wrynn; Ben Foster will play the mysterious mentor Medivh; and Ben Schnetzer will portray young mage Khadgar. For the orc-filled Horde, Toby Kebbel will play Frostwolf Clan leader Durotan; Clancy Brown will portray the war chief Blackhand; and Daniel Wu will embody orc ruler Gul’Dan. The performances of the actors portraying orcs will be computer generated. “Mission: Impossible” actress Paula Patton will portray Garona, an orc who is caught between the Alliance and the Horde. Unlike the other actors portraying members of the snarling orc race, Jones said her performance won’t be completely computer generated. After the presentation, attendees lined up for a seat in a makeshift 600-seat theatre equipped with Dolby Atmos technology to watch a trailer for the film, as well as footage that illustrated how special-effects studio Industrial Light and Magic is creating computer-generated orcs with expressive faces. “We have so many special effects,” said Jones. “It’s ‘Avatar’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’ at the same time.” ___ Online: http://fightforthealliance.com http://fightforthehorde.com ___ Follow AP Entertainment Writer Derrik J. That seems to be the message after Vancouver Police make an arrest in a two-year-old hit and run case. Cst. Brian Montague says it’s been two years of painstaking work to collect enough evidence not only about the car, but about the person believed to be behind the wheel. Back on Nov. 8, 2012, a 30-year-old woman was hit on Renfrew Street at Adanac. The driver took off. “I’m a bit surprised she survived the hit and run. She had upper and lower body injuries – leg injuries, back injuries, nerve damage. She still suffers from her injuries today. They were life-altering, no doubt about it,” says Montague. He notes investigators honed in on what was left behind after the car sped away. “From the evidence left behind at the scene, we had a pretty good idea what vehicle we were looking for fairly quickly. Our investigators managed to narrow it down over time. Piece by piece they put the puzzle together.” Charged with failing to remain at the scene is 29-year-old Terry Dai Yee Ma of Richmond, who was living in Burnaby at the time of hit and run. Montague says it’s never too late for any driver to come forward if they’ve been involved in a hit and run. ]]> http://www.news1130.com/2014/11/07/vpd-crack-two-year-old-hit-and-run-case/feed/ 0 http://www.news1130.com/2014/11/07/another-teen-wounded-in-washington-state-school-shooting-dies-fifth-fatality-from-gunfire/ http://www.news1130.com/2014/11/07/another-teen-wounded-in-washington-state-school-shooting-dies-fifth-fatality-from-gunfire/#comments Fri, 07 Nov 2014 22:06:18 -0800 The Associated Press 1417907 Read the Rest of the Entry]]> SEATTLE – Another of the teenagers wounded in a Washington state high school shooting has died, raising to five the number of fatalities after a student opened fire in the cafeteria two weeks ago. The Lions had two chances to earn the third seed in the West Division playoffs, but ended the season with losses to Edmonton and Calgary. If Saskatchewan wins its final game then the Roughriders will finish third and the Lions will finish fourth. The fourth place team will crossover to the East Division for the playoffs, while the third place team will visit the Edmonton Eskimos in the western semifinal. Eric Rogers led the charge offensively for the Stampeders as he caught four passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns, including a 24-yard score with 23 seconds left in the first half, which put Calgary ahead by 11 points. Glenn completed 26 of his 36 pass attempts for 312 yards and a touchdown, but his two interceptions took scores away from the Lions, as they were in the redzone. Stefan Logan returned from injury for the Lions and the speedy running back had a big game despite the result. Logan rushed 16 times for 114 yards and added six catches for 70 yards. Emmanuel Arceneaux caught BC’s lone touchdown of the game, as he scored with 1:01 left in the second quarter. Paul McCallum added three field goals. The loss means BC finishes the season with a 9-9 record. Calgary finishes at 15-3. ]]> http://www.news1130.com/2014/11/07/lions-fall-to-stampeders-in-regular-season-finale/feed/ 0 http://www.news1130.com/2014/11/07/dispute-over-immigration-erupts-during-white-house-lunch-designed-to-search-for-compromise-2/ http://www.news1130.com/2014/11/07/dispute-over-immigration-erupts-during-white-house-lunch-designed-to-search-for-compromise-2/#comments Fri, 07 Nov 2014 21:06:13 -0800 Nedra Pickler And Erica Werner, The Associated Press 1417871 Read the Rest of the Entry]]> WASHINGTON – A White House lunch aiming for co-operation boiled into a fresh dispute with newly empowered Republicans over immigration reform, with Republican leaders warning President Barack Obama to his face not to take unilateral action. The president stood unflinchingly by his plan to act. The White House gathering took place Friday, three days after Republicans expanded their majority in the House of Representatives and wrested control of the Senate from the Democrats in midterm elections. Republicans attending the postelection lunch at Obama’s invitation said they asked him for more time to work on immigration legislation, but the president said his patience was running out. Obama, facing enormous pressure to act from Hispanics who form an important part of the Democratic base, reiterated his intent to act on his own by the end of the year if lawmakers don’t approve legislation to ease deportations before then and send it to him to sign. The Republicans’ approach “seemed to fall on deaf ears,” Sen. John Cornyn of Texas said in a telephone interview. “The president instead of being contrite or saying in effect to America, ‘I hear you,’ as a result of the referendum on his policies that drove this last election, he seems unmoved and even defiant.” A bipartisan immigration bill, which would boost border security, increase visas for legal immigrants and provide a path to citizenship for the 11 million immigrants living in the country illegally, has stalled in the House. There has been no indication that the House will vote before the newly elected Congress takes over in January. Obama press secretary Josh Earnest said there was no reason that executive action on immigration should kill opportunities for the president and Republicans to find common ground. The White House said that Obama laid out three areas where he and Congress could work together before the end of the year — emergency funding to combat the Ebola outbreak, approval of a federal budget and quick action on spending to fight the Islamic State militant group. House Speaker John Boehner’s office said he told Obama he was ready to work with the president on a new authorization for military force against the IS group if the president worked to build bipartisan support. The White House announced soon after lunch ended that the U.S. was sending as many as 1,500 more troops to Iraq to serve as advisers, trainers and security personnel as part of the mission. Obama is also asking Congress for more than $5 billion to help fund the fight. And the White House said, “The president reiterated his commitment to taking action on immigration reform in light of the House’s inability to pass a comprehensive bill.” The meeting was tense at times, according to a senior House Republican aide. The aide was not authorized to describe the back-and-forth publicly by name and spoke only on condition of anonymity. Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid, about to lose his grip on the upper chamber, barely said a word. The aide said at one point as House Speaker John Boehner was making an argument on immigration, Obama responded that his patience was running out and Vice-President Joe Biden interrupted to ask how long Republicans needed. Obama angrily cut Biden off, the aide said. In public, Obama’s tone had been more upbeat as he opened the gathering. The president said the lunch was a chance to “explore where we can make progress” after Americans showed in the midterm elections that they wanted to see more accomplished in Washington. Reporters were ushered out before any lawmaker spoke or lunch was served. Republican descriptions of the meeting were provided after it ended, with aides speaking only on condition of anonymity. Boehner’s office said he suggested that the president should back a Republican jobs bill as a starting place for bipartisan action. Obama said at the start he was interested in “hearing and sharing ideas” for compromise on measures to boost the economy, then mentioned his personal priorities of university affordability and investment in road and building projects. He also touted improved monthly job growth numbers out Friday as evidence his economic policies are working, saying, “We’re doing something right here.” ___ Associated Press writers Donna Cassata and Andrew Taylor contributed to this report. Fabiola Ferro’s lawyers filed a statement of claim in Ontario Superior Court against MP Sylvain Chicoine, and are asking for more than $150,000 in damages. In the claim, Ferro alleges that a colleague in the Parliament Hill office verbally abused her, gave her extra work and insulted and isolated her on the basis of her gender. Ferro, 34, alleges Chicoine fired her after she initiated an unsuccessful complaint through a committee linked to her collective agreement. None of the allegations have been tested in court, and neither Ferro or Chicoine was immediately available for comment.
