Jase, their owner, really wanted some nice photos of the boys to put up around his house. I set up the portable studio right there in his living room and with a little patience (and a lot of doggy treats) we managed to get some lovely shots of Vinnie and Duke. At this point I should make a confession. I absolutely love dogs and I had a blast on this job! After the studio session we headed over the road to a nice park and got some more photos of the dogs in action. I ended up shooting hundreds of images so it was really difficult to choose my favourites for this blog post. But here they are - my favourite 10 photos of Vinnie and Duke . Aren't they gorgeous? They're a great way to get to know the couple better before the wedding and lots of people find they're a great way of removing the stress and tension they might be feeling about being photographed on their wedding day. One family shoot, a couple of headshot shoots and also a couple of fitness shoots. This is Clint. He's a personal trainer based in London who needed some photos for an upcoming website project. My little studio is much more geared towards headshots but with a little moving around of furniture and a little creativity we found enough space for these photos. We started with some headshots - everyone needs a good headshot these days - and then did the fitness photos. Clint had never been photographed professionally before but he relaxed into it pretty quickly and we were able to get some great photos with a range of different looks. My little studio was busier than ever with 4 shoots in just two days! Sally came over on Thursday afternoon to get some new headshots done. The last time she'd had them done was at college so it was definitely time for a refresh! Headshot photography is great fun. Working for a couple of hours with someone to create an engaging and flattering portrait of them is always a blast and Sally did really well - delivering lots of really strong expressions. She looked confident, relaxed and warm... Those are the keys to a great headshot. It was also an exciting day as Sally received a call during the headshot shoot itself. I promised not to give anything away, but you may well end up seeing a lot more of this very talented (and multi-lingual!) young lady soon! Now - for the camera and lighting nerds out there (and that definitely includes me!), I really love this lighting style for headshots. It's a very simple but really effective 2 light set up. Two big softboxes right in front of the camera - one high and one low. The lower one is about a stop less powerful than the top one. This is really important because if you have the lower one too bright then you can get some weird and spooky uplighting that's not really flattering! But - if you have it about a stop down you get a lovely, almost theatrical-foot-lights upwash look that's amazing. Another great benefit of this type of lighting for headshots is that is makes the eyes look naturally bright. Here's a quick behind the scenes photo to show you the set up from Sally's headshot shoot. I used the same lighting a couple of weeks ago on Dee's shoot . I had met Sonia and Harvey on another project and we chatted about making some nice family photos and when I found out they all lived at Whitley Bay I suggested we do it there. Who doesn't a love a day at the beach?! We weren't lucky enough to get beautiful blue skies, but this is Newcastle after all! Still, it was great fun.... these shoot always are. Working to create a friendly and confident portrait of someone is such a blast. It's all about expression - nothing else matters in a head shot. It helps of course if the picture is nicely lit and technically sound, but what you're aiming for is for the person in front of the camera to look relaxed, confident, friendly and highly employable! Norm has been involved in all sorts of great shows and was most recently featured in the last series of Spartacus: War of the Damned. He needed new head shots so he came over on Monday. A great fun shoot and Norm delivered a really good range of expressions.
