Russia plays host As the world convenes for the Sochi Olympics, Russia has increased its already intense security measures as concerns persist over the threat of terror attacks. Winter Olympics Venues The 2014 Winter Games will play out at two venue “clusters” in a dazzling array of world-class facilities featuring state-of-the-art technology, icy-slick design and a price tag of more than $50 billion. Winter Olympics Skiing A mogul is a bump in a ski run. An Olympic freestyle event, mogul debuted at the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Skiers are required to perform two jumps throughout the course. Judges evaluate mogul navigation and the quality and difficulty of the jumps. Speed is another factor. Winter Olympics Bobsled Bobsled has been around since the first Olympic Winter Games in 1924. In the event, controlled bobs, or sledges, shoot down artificial ice tracks. There are three Olympic bobsled events: two- and four-man bobsled and women’s bobsled with two women on each team. Winter Olympics Figure Skating The triple loop dates back to the 1952 Oslo Games where Dick Button landed his innovative leap and the judges unanimously awarded him gold. The skater begins the jump from the back outside edge, the edge of the skate on the outer side of the leg. The jump must be executed with a clear style relating to the chosen music and choreography.
