This week, Big Jay highlights The Beatles’ “HELP!,” Aretha Franklin’s “Spanish Harlem,” and Laura Branigan’s hit “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You.” 1960s “HELP!” The Beatles The film called “HELP!” [http://wcbsfm.cbslocal.com/2013/07/03/help-yourself-to-the-new-digitally-remastered-film-beatles-fans/] may not have been as good as “A Hard Day’s Night,” but it certainly didn’t diminish the Beatlemania that continued to sweep the world this week in 1965. The colorful island of New Providence in the Bahamas was picked to film the warm-weather portions of the film due to tax purposes; as England had a very high rate of income levies. Nobody in the cast or crew complained, as it was in February of ’65 when filming began. The Beatles and film team, along with journalists and radio personalities, stayed in the Caribbean due to the filming for just over two weeks. The movie Help! was a take-off on the James Bond-type of films at the time. The song “Help!” was in week-two of a three-consecutive survey-period run at No. 1 on the Hot 100 Singles chart. Once back in England, the entourage headed for the cold climate of Austria where they stayed for six days in order to shoot other outdoor scenes, including skiing and tobogganing. They finished the film at Twickenham Film Studios in a suburb of London, along with a few other remote locations around the city. The movie’s first working-title was Beatles 2; then Ringo Starr recommended Eight Arms To Hold You. In fact, that title showed up on a single released before the movie called “Ticket To Ride.” If you look at your Capitol single, it plainly says in parenthesis, (From the United Artists film Eight Arms To Hold You) underneath the title and writing credits. “Help!” was a plea for just that by Lennon, who was having a spell of insecurity after the tremendous success of the Beatles over the last two years. 1970s (AP Photo) “Spanish Harlem” Aretha Franklin This is my favorite Aretha Franklin track, and it topped the Best Selling Soul Singles chart this week in ’71 on Atlantic Records. The remake of “Spanish Harlem” written by two record industry stalwarts Jerry Leiber and Phil Spector (two Caucasian guys) and produced by Leiber and his partner Mike Stoller for Ben E. King in 1960 (No. 10 Pop) on Atco Records also reached the No. 2 position on the Hot 100 Singles chart for two weeks for Aretha on the mother-label Atlantic. It became the “Queen of Soul’s’ 11th million-selling 45 RPM release. “Spanish Harlem” also reached No. 5 on the Easy Listening Singles chart. This was her 11th chart-topping R&B single. If Ben E. King’s version wasn’t perfect enough—the right-rockin’ Lady Ree gave it new meaning and a whole lotta soul. It’s Big Jay Record Pig Music Trivia© Time: Do you know who played the organ on Lady Soul’s version of “Spanish Harlem?” If you guessed Dr. John a/k/a ‘The Night Tripper and/or Mac Rebennack; you’d be correct. He was joined by some crack studio cats like Chuck Rainy on bass guitar (one time musician with The King Curtis All-Stars who opened for the Beatles on their second U.S. concert tour) and was a mainstay of Steely Dan for many years. That’s Donny Hathaway on electric piano. On guitar was Cornell Dupree and the Spanish guitar was played by Don Arnone. Also, drummer Bernard “Pretty” Purdie was on the track who was Aretha’s musical director from 1970 through 1975. Aretha’s sisters Erma and Carolyn Franklin with her group the Sweethearts of Soul were on background vocals. The single was not on a regular studio album. It was held back from Franklin’s Young, Gifted And Black LP, but was included on the album Aretha’s Greatest Hits released in early September of ’71, just as “Spanish Harlem” was at its peak. 1980s (Photo by Scott Gries/Getty Images) “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You” Laura Branigan This was the second of three back-to-back weeks as the leader of the Adult Contemporary Singles chart for Laura Branigan this week in ‘83 with “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You” on Atlantic Records. The song was written by Michael Bolton and Doug James and reached No. 12 on the Hot 100 Singles chart in ’83. Bolton’s own version of the song became a No. 1 record on the Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary charts in 1989 for the gravel-throated singer. The song has been sung in Spanish as well as English by artists all over the world. Released on July 1, 1983, Branigan did NOT support this song with a video as was the practice in the early to mid-‘80s. Instead, she sang the song on Dick Clark’s Rockin’ Eve and on the show Solid Gold. It was featured on Laura Branigan’s LP called Branigan 2 as the second single from the album on Atlantic. Her rendition of “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You” was a No. 1 song in Canada on their separate Adult Contemporary chart. Your Biggest Jay had the pleasure of interviewing her for about an hour on one of my radio shows in 1984. She was a charming, almost shy performer; but she DID sit on my lap for a memorable photograph that I will always treasure. Her husband died in 1996 of colon cancer. She had taken a sabbatical from performing to take care of him. Sadly, Branigan passed away in 2004 from an up to that time undiagnosed brain aneurysm in her home. –Big Jay Sorensen/WCBS-FM Read More Music News On WCBSFM.com: Ringo Starr Speaks on ISIS Jihadists Getting Beatles Nicknames: It’s ‘Against Everything the Beatles Stood For’ Gene Simmons: Rock is ‘Finally Dead,’ Killed by Entitled, White Middle- and Upper-Class Young People Songs from The Ditch: Neil Young’s 10 Best Songs from His Weirdest Albums U2 Denies Report Their New Album Will Help Launch iPhone 6 ]]> http://wcbsfm.cbslocal.com/2014/09/06/this-week-in-history-w-big-jay-the-beatles-aretha-laura-branigan/feed/ 0 http://wcbsfm.cbslocal.com/2014/09/05/ringo-starr-speaks-on-isis-jihadists-getting-beatles-nicknames-its-against-everything-the-beatles-stood-for/ http://wcbsfm.cbslocal.com/2014/09/05/ringo-starr-speaks-on-isis-jihadists-getting-beatles-nicknames-its-against-everything-the-beatles-stood-for/#comments Fri, 05 Sep 2014 21:47:34 +0000 cbskapost http://cbswcbsfm.wordpress.com/?p=130783 “If we stood for anything we never stood for that. And they took stands on all of these things. Chances are his choice is the same as yours if you're a lover of the Golden Age of Hollywood. ]]> Over the last several decades, if you weren’t taking movie advice from Siskel and Ebert, you were most likely flipping through the movie guide of Leonard Maltin. His Movie Guide , first published during the 1960s and annually since 1988, became a necessity to anyone considering themselves a cinephile. If you never got your hands on it, you’ve certainly seen Maltin at some point during his 30 year stretch on Entertainment Tonight . For someone so ingrained with movie culture and having viewed thousands of movies, there is one film that stands out to Maltin as his favorite. Chances are his choice is the same as yours if you’re a lover of the Golden Age of Hollywood. “ Casablanca ,” Maltin says without hesitation of the 1942 film starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Paul Henreid. “I wish it was something more offbeat, I wish I had a more original answer, but that’s my favorite movie.” Maltin’s obvious answer does come with from a genuine experience of enjoyment from viewing the film for the first time. “I was a teenager when I first saw it — I think I was really an adolescent when I first saw it — and I saw it on a theater screen,” Maltin fondly recalls. “There was a big Bogart revival at one point. And to see that with an audience, in a theater on a screen at an impressionable age; it just won me over completely and I’ve never fallen out of love with it.” Leonard Maltin’s 2015 Movie Guide will be the final edition published and will include 16,000 capsule reviews and over 300 new movies. But an end to a hard copy of the guide doesn’t mean you will be without Maltin’s insight; he makes regular appearances on Reelz and continuously updates leonardmaltin.com . The main takeaway from Simmons’ conversation with his son is that the KISS frontman thinks that rock is dead — “finally,” he says. To be fair, this is probably Simmons’ least controversial remark within the past few months — after saying he has no sympathy for depressed people and drug addicts, telling immigrants they should “learn English,” and defending Donald Sterling and the 1 percent — and Simmons has a point: rock music doesn’t have the charting power it once did. Just ask Kanye West and he’ll tell you that rap is the new rock ‘n’ roll. But in Simmons’ mind, rock is dead because of file-sharing — not just because, in some ways, it’s been replaced by hip-hop. “There is no industry for that anymore. And who is the culprit? There’s always the changing tide of interests — music taste changes with each generation. To blame that is silly,” Simmons said. “But there’s something else. The death of rock was not a natural death. Rock did not die of old age. It was murdered. And the real culprit is that kid’s 15-year-old next-door neighbor, probably a friend of his. Maybe even one of the bandmates he’s jamming with. Some brilliance, somewhere, was going to be expressed, and now it won’t, because it’s that much harder to earn a living playing and writing songs… The masses do not recognize file-sharing and downloading as stealing because there’s a copy left behind for you — it’s not that copy that’s the problem, it’s the other one that someone received but didn’t pay for. The problem is that nobody will pay you for the 10,000 hours you put in to create what you created.” Read more on Radio.com. Traveling there soon became a bore, so I headed for the ditch.” That’s a famous quote by Neil Young , which he wrote for the liner notes of his 1977 compilation, Decade . He was referring to the fact that “Heart of Gold” was his first (and only) No. 1 hit single, and the LP that it came from, 1972’s Harvest , was his only release to top the album charts. His next three albums — 1973’s Time Fades Away , 1974’s On the Beach and 1975’s Tonight’s the Night — known to fans as “The Ditch Trilogy” made no attempt to replicate Harvest ‘s commercial impact. In the subsequent years, Young spent a lot of time in “the ditch,” making highly stylized albums that really never had a shot at making it to the top of the charts. Or anywhere in the neighborhood. That would include 1982’s synth and vocoder-drenched Trans , 1983’s rockabilly Everybody’s Rockin’ , 1985’s country exploration Old Ways , 1988’s big-band R&B album This Note’s for You and 2003’s post-9/11 concept album Greendale . More recently, there’s been this year’s A Letter Home , an album of covers recorded in the Voice-o-Graph booth at Jack White ‘s Third Man Records store in Nashville. His next album is rumored to feature Young backed by an orchestra . Here, then, is a list of some of Neil’s best songs from his weirdest albums. Put another way, it’s his greatest hits from “The Ditch.” ~ 1. “Let it Shine” Stephen Stills and Neil Young have often brought out the best in one another (see: Buffalo Springfield ; many CSNY live recordings, including — and especially — the recently released CSNY 1974 ). And oftentimes, it’s been quite the opposite: see CSNY’s more recent studio recordings, and also the Stills Young Band’s sole album, 1976’s Long May You Run . While the title track is acknowledged as a classic, and rightfully so, the rest of the album has mostly been forgotten because Stills’ songs sound like straight up “yacht rock,” and Young’s are throwaways. Except this one, that would have sounded at home on a mid or late-’70s Crazy Horse record. Related: David Crosby Talks ‘CSNY 1974′ Box Set and Neil Young Rarity ‘Pushed It Over the End’ 2. “Surfer Joe and Moe the Sleaze” Long rumored to be about then-Reprise/Warner Brothers head Mo Ostin, this song was from Young’s punk/new wave inspired Crazy Horse album, 1981’s Re*act*or , which ended his relationship with the label he’d spent his solo career on up to that point. He’d soon move on to Geffen Records, later returning to the Warner fold after realizing that the grass wasn’t necessarily greener over there (more on that in a minute). Re*act*or is a tough listen, but “Surfer Joe and Moe the Sleaze” is the most Crazy Horse-ish song on the album, and also the most fun. 3. “Mr. Soul” Maybe this one is cheating a bit, as it’s an update of a classic. But Young’s synth and drum machine-laden version of his Buffalo Springfield song for his 1982 Trans album holds up rather well (not that it tops the original). Many point to Trans as “exhibit A” of Young’s baffling ’80s phase, but for the open minded, it’s an interesting album with lots of hidden gems (including “Sample and Hold” and “Like an Inca”). And while music should be enjoyed without the benefit of context, here, context is useful: as Young told MOJO magazine (via Thrasher’s Wheat ), the album was inspired by his struggle to communicate with his son: “We were involved in this program with my young son Ben for 18 months which consumed between 15 and 18 hours of every day we had. It was just all-encompassing and it had a direct effect on the music of Re*act*or and Trans . You see, my son is severely handicapped, and at that time was simply trying to find a way to talk, to communicate with other people. That’s what Trans is all about. And that’s why, on that record, you know I’m saying something but you can’t understand what it is. Well, that’s the exact same feeling I was getting from my son.” Read more on Radio.com ]]> http://wcbsfm.cbslocal.com/2014/09/05/songs-from-the-ditch-neil-youngs-10-best-songs-from-his-weirdest-albums/feed/ 0 http://wcbsfm.cbslocal.com/2014/09/05/u2-denies-report-their-new-album-will-help-launch-iphone-6/ http://wcbsfm.cbslocal.com/2014/09/05/u2-denies-report-their-new-album-will-help-launch-iphone-6/#comments Fri, 05 Sep 2014 13:28:11 +0000 cbskapost http://cbswcbsfm.wordpress.com/?p=130750 The band has let it be known that they're not springing their 13th album as part of the upcoming Apple campaign for the next iPhone. ]]> By Philip Cosores U2 is denying reports that the new iPhone 6 launch will feature the band in a pivotal role. I remember when I was a teen, our family dog, who loved to chase bottle caps during her walks had a similar problem as the pup in this story. Same situation: She wasn’t eating and fell ill. When we took her to the vet, she had $1.57 in change in her stomach and 3 Tropicana bottle caps. Idiot.
