Avakov Orders Create New Special Force Instead Of Berkut (16:15, Wednesday, February 26, 2014)

Ukrainian News Agency

Acting Internal Affairs Minister Arsen Avakov has ordered to create a new public security special force instead of the disbanded Berkut special force, he has told a news conference.

"I have given an order as to creation of a new subdivision which will be meant for fulfillment of tasks of guaranteeing public security," he stressed.

Avakov says he has given an order to conduct attestation of all employees of the disbanded Berkut special force, and basing on results of this attestation will be made decision on possibility of their work at law-enforcement agencies.

The attestation must be finished in 10-15 days.

In all they plan to conduct attestation of about 4,000 employees of the disbanded Berkut special force.

Moreover, Avakov underlines that investigative operational procedures are under way to locate some 35 Berkut staff who voluntarily left unit's lines and took weapons with them.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, on February 25 Avakov signed an order to disband the Berkut special force.
