The World Psychic Health Day has been marked since 1992. The World Health Organization declares that nowadays over 450 million people all over the world suffer from psychic diseases. According to the epidemiological data 5% to7% of population in the majority of countries are affected by psychic diseases and 15-23% of people have border psychic disorders.
Among the most spread psychic and behavioral disorders are depressions, suicides, schizophrenia, epilepsy and alcohol addictions. The WHO prognoses that the number of people who suffer from psychic diseases will grow: by 2020 their share among all diseases will reach 50%. Doctors point out that every third individual in Ukraine has psychic disorders.

Caritas Ukraine optimizes delivery of medical and social services for low-income Ukrainians

According to the recent study conducted by the UNO there are almost 70% of citizens in Ukraine that are below the poverty line. Experts say that nearly 5 million Ukrainians are unemployed. Revenues of citizens are getting lower; respectively the number of low-income individuals is increasing. More and more people are addressing the state for help and subsidies, at the same time the amount of social benefits is shortening.
These circumstances complicate the access to qualified medical and social services for quite many Ukrainians in crisis living conditions. Today there is an acute necessity in optimization of cooperation of state establishments, civic organizations and foreign philanthropists to counter the mentioned problem. In the beginning of 2013 regional Caritas organizations in Odessa, Kolomyia and Novovolynsk started to implement project on creation of efficient support mechanisms for vulnerable population groups and medical and social institutions in small cities of Ukraine.

Caritas, local authorities and German colleagues joined efforts to protect children rights in Ivano-Frankivsk

“Getting acquainted with basic rights and freedoms is the first step for personal fulfillment as a full-bodied citizen. We all clearly understand that it is impossible to be protected without knowing the limit of own rights and freedoms, things permitted and forbidden in society interest. Active and capable individual from legal point should be informed since childhood. Every child requires care and kind attitude, felling that he/she is needed. These factors influence child’s development, shaping of his/her personality, moral and ethic norms,” Natalia Kozakevych, Executive Director of Caritas Ivano-Frankivsk of the UGCC, is convinced.
“Implementation of the UNO Convention on Children Rights provisions. Social and legal support of families and prevention of child abuse” seminar was carried for two days at the end of September in Ivano-Frankivsk. This event marked the beginning of the project “Every child has right for care of parents, community and the state”. Such social initiative is implemented by Caritas Ivano-Frankivsk with the support of the Children Services Office of the Executive Committee of Ivano-Frankivsk City Council.

Over 1200 needful children received material assistance thanks to “First school backpack” Caritas initiative in Ivano-Frankivsk

Caritas Ivano-Frankivsk UGCC has finished a milestone initiative “First school backpack”. For ten years employees and volunteers of local Caritas had possibility to assist needful children in a decent way. It was done by means of charitable donations of parishes from Ivano-Frankivsk Archdiocese of the UGCC, city citizens and business representatives. This year 85 first-form school-children and 227 pupils from 2-11 forms received help in form of stationary goods.
“All recipients of assistance are representatives of socially vulnerable population groups:
- 1 child-orphan;
- 2 children left without parental care;
- 9 disabled kids;
- 243 children from large and poverty-stricken families of Ivano-Frankivsk and oblast, and also educates of St. Nikolas Campus (Kryhivtsi village);

“Don’t provide your clients with ready-made solutions, it’s better to guide their movement” – Frank Doelker

Since 2011 Frank Doelker (Frank Dölker) has been invited by Caritas Germany to Ukraine and he comes annually to work as a trainer with social employees of ‘Mobile work with youth in Ukraine’ Caritas Ukraine project.
Frank is a top-rank expert in social work. It is his occupation for 20 years and he also teaches social work at the university in Fulda city and for priests in Berlin (personal web-page).
Caritas Ukraine started its work with street and crisis children, youth and families in 2001. At that time Caritas Germany (in particular, Caritas Aachen) encouraged the initiative on creation of mobile service for street children (project was called ‘Help on Wheels’). Moreover, Caritas Spain, Rotary-clubs from Switzerland, Ukrainian Catholic University and private benefactors joined to support it.

More than medicine: football in life of disabled people

Sport trainings are an indispensible part for improvement of physical development of an individual, and for people with disabilities it is a certain kind of treatment. This medicine treats both injured body and soul. It is a tradition for Caritas Ivano-Frankivsk in September to organize a football match for its clients at the yard of College on physical education. This time Caritas clients were competing with youth who have special needs from Galych region.
Sport competitions have become a regular practice and a norm for Caritas clients. It’s said in local Caritas that children with different disabilities need sport trainings in order to improve their physical condition. “Our disabled clients have lessons in exercise room twice a week and in the warm season - at the football field. Kids enjoy playing football!
