Recently, Caritas Kolomyia-Chernivtsi Eparchy of the UGCC has conducted a round table devoted to the “Creation of efficient support mechanisms for vulnerable population groups and medical and social institutions in small cities of Ukraine”. The event was held in the press-center of the organization. Representatives of state hospitals, orphanages, geriatric care homes, authorities who are involved in solving problems of low-income individuals participated in the round table. It was aimed at studying needs and possibilities of organizations that provide medical and social services.
The objective of the new project, implemented by Caritas of Kolomyia-Chernivtsi Eparchy, is to create data bases of everyone in need of help, and also people and organizations that can render support to the needful ones. This project also foresees establishing cooperation between civil society organizations and state institutions on local level to form unified system of filling gaps in the existing system of services delivery.

With support of foreign benefactors disabled youth are travelling in Carpathians

Young people with special needs who are a part of Amazing Hands Social Center of Caritas Ukraine in Drohobych returned from recreation in the mountains. For four days they stayed in Strikly Village (Old Sambir region of Lvivska oblast). They dwelled in the house of Sambir-Drohobych Eparchy of the UGCC that is located in the picturesque place surrounded by mountains and forests.
“Early autumn met us with rain, but soon tender sun came out and mood for leisure had completely changed. In educational and recreational camp there were 14 challenged clients from Amazing Hands Social Center, 3 parents, 3 employees, 2 volunteers and a spiritual father.
We have met our old fellows from Caritas of Stryi Eparchy of the UGCC, 21 young disabled individuals, - that doubled joy of our youth. All days were full of various training and entertaining tasks.

Football is effectively used for social work with crisis children and youth in Caritas Kyiv

Dozens millions of Ukrainians were watching football game between national teams of Ukraine and England. The 10th of September became a significant occasion for football fans. Children who are clients of Caritas Kyiv were honored to accompany football players on the field of the Olympic stadium. It turned for them one of the most remarkable event in life.
“Football lesson is a separate direction of work in-line with other activities on social adaptation of children and youth that found themselves in complicated living circumstances. For 12 years low-income school students in Kolomyia receive presents at the Day of Knowledge

It was a challenge to get into Caritas a day before a new school year starts. Dozens of poverty-stricken children and their parents were waiting to receive school bags. People came here for presents not only from Kolomyia, but from other regional villages. That day son of Mrs. Natalia from Tsenyava (village nearby Kolomyia) was expecting tremblingly to get his bag.
Woman alone brings up two little children, though she has the second group of disability and requires additional care. But she doesn’t complain about her complicated fortune, and got used to these life circumstances. “I am grateful for Caritas assistance. I have no possibility to buy everything for school and this support is really at hand. It is the first time I addressed Caritas, and I was pleased to be treated with understanding!” young mother retells with excitement.
The first bell brings a great deal of anxiety and expectations, because there is a whole year of studying ahead. It is the twelfth year that Caritas of Kolomyia-Chernivtsi Eparchy supports students to get ready for school and provide them with everything they need so that they can concentrate on getting new knowledge.

Summer camps of regional Caritas Ukraine organizations united hundreds of needful youngsters

Every year more than 20 regional Caritas Ukraine organizations conduct summer camps for children and youth in crisis living conditions. In the mountains or at the sea, in tents or at recreation centers hundreds of youngsters were granted possibility to get healthier, travel, find new acquaintances, become friends with psychologists and teachers, acquire valuable spiritual experience.
Charitable initiative ‘Christmas candle’ that is annually organized in Greek and catholic communities all over Ukraine contributes to holding camps for children and youth in need. Financial support is additionally rendered from projects that get donations from Caritas in France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and also from money of private benefactors.

“We don’t get financial support for work with labour migrants’ children from anyone out of 40 million Ukrainians,” Zoryana Lukavetska

Recently, closing conference on project “Network of Social Centres for the Children of Labour Migrants”, was held in Lviv. This project has been implemented by Caritas Ukraine since 2010. The event was aimed to draw a line on three-year work of the project, identify main lessons, share experience and discuss perspectives of the development of children social centres in regional offices of Caritas Ukraine.
The conference was held on August 22-23; among its participants were approximately 25 employees of social centres for children of Caritas Ukraine project on assistance to labour migrants children and also workers of Committee on migration of the UGCC, workers of the Ukrainian Catholic University, and employees of practical psychology and social work centres in Ivano-Frankivsk – all in all, nearly 40 experts.
We interviewed Zoryana Lukavetska, National coordinator of work with kids, youth and families in need, about experience and characteristic aspects of work with labour migrants’ children, geography and financial support of projects directed to help needful children and youth.
