More 0 05 2013 14 Shooting victim had been targeted before Author: Oleg | Section: --- | Views: The 31-year old man shot in Glengormley this week had been targeted before by an armed gang in Ardoyne. Frankie McKeown is in a stable condition in hospital after two men entered his home in Mayfield Court and shot him in the stomach at around 10pm last night (Wednesday). The shooting happened as children from the Hightown Road estate played in the street in full view of the gunmen. A woman - thought to be his partner, Arlene McAlea - who was in the house at the time escaped uninjured. In March 2007 the family had been targeted at their home in Jamaica Court in Ardoyne. Then, the front of the property was sprayed with bullets. The family’s two young children - then aged nine and five - were with a relative when ten shots were fired through the windows of their home. This morning the family were too shocked to speak about last night’s incident. Mr McKeown is being treated in the Royal Victoria Hospital where his condition is described as “stable”. Speaking to the North Belfast News at the time of the first incident the shocked mother of two described how she took cover under a blanket on her bedroom floor to escape the hail of bullets. “I couldn’t even get under our bed because the base comes all the way to the floor, so I just lay on the floor of the bedroom under a blanket, waiting for the shooting to stop. But then I thought they were going to break into the house. I was sitting with my back against the bedroom door, just waiting for them to get in,” she said. “I will never get this out of my head.” Neighbours living in the Mayfield estate said they heard the gunshots at around 10pm last night. “I was sitting watching TV with my son and I heard the bangs, I didn’t know what it was at first. This is normally a very quiet area and I have never experienced anything like it here before,” said one woman who wished to remain anonymous. Another woman said there were children still playing in the street at the time of the attack. “It wasn’t really dark yet and there were still young ones in the street. No-one wants something like this on their doorstep,” she said. A spokesman for the PSNI called for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact detectives in Newtownabbey CID. ... More 0 05 2013 14 Travers killing a tragic mistake Author: Oleg | Section: --- | Views: The West Belfast woman at the centre of the ‘special adviser row’ at Stormont has said that the killing of Mary Travers was a “tragic mistake”. Former IRA prisoner Mary McArdle was sentenced to life for her part in the shooting that left the 22-year-old Holy Child Primary School teacher dead and her father, Magistrate Tom Travers, seriously injured after they were attacked coming out of Mass in South Belfast on April 8, 1984. 19-year-old Ms McArdle was arrested nearby after being found in possession of two handguns. Sinn Féin was heavily criticised by Mary Travers’ sister Ann after it was reported that Mary McArdle had taken up a party role as a special adviser to new Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilín. Sinn Féin revealed in the wake of the criticism that Carál Ní Chuilín, Mary McArdle and North Belfast MLA Gerry Kelly had all received death threats from the loyalist terror group the Orange Volunteers. Breaking her silence on the controversy, Mary McArdle told the Andersonstown News yesterday that she didn’t believe that anything she might say about the killing of Mary Travers could ease the grief endured by the Travers family. “Nothing can bring back lost loved ones,” she said. “I want to state clearly that the killing of Mary Travers was a tragic mistake and I regret that it happened. “If I were to begin to describe the specific context of conflict within which it happened I would be accused of trying to justify her death. And I have no wish to do that.” The Sinn Féin woman said that she felt she had to speak out after events of recent days. “Sometimes, particularly where grief and hurt are involved, the less said the better. But so much has been said this past week about me, my past and my recent appointment, that I feel now that I must say something. “I come from Turf Lodge and like many others in this community I have been an active republican my whole life – as a young person involved with the IRA on the streets where I grew up, and for the last 14 years as a committed Sinn Féin member. “I fully accept my responsibility for my role in that conflict. I served 14 years as a POW. I understand the hurt out there. I come from and live within a community which has suffered much as a result of the conflict.” She said the peace process has given people the opportunity of a new future “but many thousands of families are still grieving”. “And of course that includes the Travers family,” she said. “We went through 30 years of war involving various armed groups, political parties, governments and state forces. And as we develop the political process which has taken us out of conflict there are now many, many individuals from all of these groups working in the political institutions, in the PSNI and as elected representatives. “I believe that it is a good thing that we are striving to work together to build better lives for the communities we come from. “The Travers family is perfectly entitled to raise this in the media if that is their wish. “Since my release from prison I have been active in Sinn Féin and have played, I hope, a constructive and positive role in winning and maintaining support for the peace process within the nationalist and republican community, not least among the community where I live and which has suffered enormously from the past conflict – and that is what I intend to continue to do.” Ms McArdle said she was delighted when Sinn Féin approached her and asked if she would accept a position as Carál Ní Chuilín’s special adviser. “We have known each other for many, many years,” she said. “We were in prison together. We trust and respect each other. I didn’t find it a difficult decision to say yes. “In many ways it represents no more than an extension of the role I’ve been involved in since my release. It is about building the peace. That is what I have been doing for many years now. “As for the salary, I, like other paid Sinn Féin activists, take home no more than an average working wage. The remainder of my salary goes back into providing a constituency service for the community in which I live and I’m pleased and proud to make that contribution.” Ms McArdle said that when she agreed to take up the role as special adviser she was fully aware that her past might be brought up by sections of the media. “I am just one of many ex-POWs working in the political institutions. I’m not in politics for personal gain, I’m in it because I believe in what I am doing. And that’s what guides me. “I know it is a big responsibility and I will work hard to support Carál and the other Sinn Féin ministers. “Republicans were key players in both initiating and building the peace process and they have a responsibility to sustain it.” Editorial, page 6. ...
