More News MIR May 10, 2011 The " Multidisciplinary Research and Intermediation Project " was launched in 2004 with support of the Global Development Network and the World Bank. The MIR initiative seeked to bridge the gap between research and policy in transition and developing countries by furthering multidisciplinary approaches to research and by promoting the dialog between scholars and decision-makers. The pilot phase of MIR was implemented simultaneously in the CIS and South Asia. To achieve the goals of MIR, GDN’s regional partners in both regions provide financial support (in the form of grants up to $25,000 for up to 18 months of work) and guidance to researchers in economics and other relevant social sciences and convene international research workshops and policy forums in order to discuss methodological challenges, research findings, and policy implications. Proposals were submitted by small teams of researchers based in the CIS countries. MIR project for the CIS region was guided by a team of internationally renowned experts: Irina Akimova (United Nations Development Project Ukraine, Kiev), Theodore Gerber (University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, USA), James Leitzel (University of Chicago, USA), Beth Mitchneck (University of Arizona, Tucson, USA), Vadim Radaev (Higher School of Economics, Moscow, Russia). The MIR workshop was held in Dakar , Senegal on January 27-28, 2005 and has became the first phase of the MIR initiative. The workshop served three main purposes: First, it constituted the final review stage for two regional competitions that were held as part of the MIR initiative in the Commonwealth of Independent States and in South Asia. Ten projects (5 from the CIS region and 5 from the South Asia) were selected for presentation in Dakar from among more than 40 submissions. Each research team was able to send two members to the workshop in order for them to present the entire range of methodological approaches that their project is expected to combine. Second, it provided for an intensive give-and-take on the implementation of MIR studies and related activities aimed at targeted dissemination and bridging the research-policy divide among scholars and resource persons representing different methodological approach and different experiences of participation in the public policy debate. Third, it facilitated professional cooperation and information sharing among two GDN networks and scholars operating in two different policy contexts, that of transition from central planning and one-party rule, and the typical developing country environment of South Asia. EERC have selected three projects for grants: 1. Oxana Sinyavskaya, Dilyara Ibragimova, Sergey Zakharov, Marina Kartseva "Family Strategies and Labor Market Behavior" 2. Oleksandra Betliy, Katerina Onishchenko, Oksana Kuzyakiv "The Evaluation of Key Determinants of Health in Ukraine in the Context of Structural and Quality-Enhancing Reforms" 3. Farrukh Suvankulov, Martin Spechler, Norsoat Allaev, Mirzo Iskandar Gulamov, Hayitbay Mahmudov, Hasan Usmanov "Institutional Reforms of Pension Systems in Central Asia: Impact on Poverty Reduction" © EERC, 1996-2010
