Is there a link? Ukraine is not using its opportunity in terms of market development and at the same time Polish pensioners are able to benefit from Ukrainian agrarian companies as stated by Elbrus Capital director, Anton Hmelnickiy. Even though such statement is certainly exaggerated, there is a grain of truth in it. As the matter of fact there is a situation when Ukrainian companies are not willing to place their stock in Ukraine, rather willing to start their IPOs in Warsaw (WSE), London (LSE), Frankfurt (DAX), and even New York (NYSE), whereas Ukrainian (PFTS) lists only few of these companies. It is understood that foreign stock exchanges have very strict requirements in terms of financial reporting and several other details, thus Ukrainian companies that are listed on those exchanges definitely benefit as being recognized and trusted. Nevertheless Ukraine is missing its opportunities. Constant prices’ increases for commodities, growing world population, signal increasing demand for these commodities and possibilities for potential larger profits as a result. Ukraine in particular will be able to start selling land starting 2012, as the ban for such transactions expires during this period. These facts contribute to rapid development of agricultural sector of Ukraine. During the last three years approximately 15 firms with capitalization over 10Bn USD were listed on international stock exchanges. One of the most popular ones is Warsaw Stock Exchange, which is closely cooperating with Pension Fund, (94Bn USD capitalization). This is the main reason why Ukraine is missing opportunities to develop its stock market. Such trend is most likely to continue in case government keeps interfering with this market and in case law enforcement system of Ukraine remains at the stage it is now. More... Hide...
