The Picture of a Contemporary Manager (or the Way They Treat Us :-) “Beauty is the Form of Genius” Oscar Wilde …It has been pretty much reconsidered lately, hasn’t it? While creating his world-known masterpiece, Oscar Wilde was followed by the Hedonism ideas. However, the burning problem of nowadays is the aspect of what ideas and principles the company authorities are followed by when outlining the picture of an average contemporary manager. The skeleton of this idea is the recourses saving. What kind of recourses? Of course, the most valuable and utmost ones are – money and time. Why to pay both, a manager and an interpreter, when one can hire a manager with a strong command of a foreign language (or languages)? Why to train a manager of a certain course, investing a lot of money, time and efforts, when one can headhunt for the necessary specialist? Thus, in the result of their “creative work”, the average-looking manager resembles a sort of a monster with the command of, at least, two foreign languages (English, of course, and some other European language) Moreover, knowledge of the Oriental language would only add to the character. It goes without saying that this “Frankenstein” should have the awe-inspiring education, which but for the traditional higher should include the degrees of chartered financial analyst, Association of Certified and Corporate Accountants and the MBA degree (you have to gain at one of the West-European business schools). He should have the impressing record of the working experience: about a year for an investment company, about two years for one of the Big Four (Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Ernst and Young, Deloitte, KPMG), two years as the Department Chief for a transnational company as well as about the same period at the same position, but for the company the candidate applies for. Not to forget – the candidate should be around 28-30. Impresses? It looks like a sort of the science-fiction. In fact, it strikes me that by the time the person gains all that qualification and qualities, he may retire. Oh, almost forgot – qualities! By the application time the candidate should be married, have a family, have the whole list of the skills required (sociability, reliability, creativity, team spirit, etc.), and to have drive and burning desire to work for the company, add to the growth of the company and by the instrumentality of the company. To finish with, I’d like to quote Oscar Wilde, who once said: “Beauty is the form of the genius”.
