About Kyiv
Kyiv – the city on seven hills
Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine, one of the largest cities in Europe, situated on the hilly banks of the Dnipro River and stretching out for 35 km from East to West and for 42 km from North to South.
Kyiv is the ancient Slavic centre, the Orthodox shrine and the capital of the powerful Kyivan Rus. The legend has it that in late 5th - early 6th A.D. the three brothers Kyi, Shchek, Khoryv and their sister Lybid founded a town on the steep right bank of the Dnipro River and named it Kyiv after their older brother. The ancient chronicle The Tale of Bygone Years gives the first mention of Kyiv as of the year of 862. In May 1982, the 1500th anniversary of the city was celebrated.
Kyiv is widely known for its unique architectural ensembles such as Saint Sophia Cathedral, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, Vladimir Church, St. Andrew's Descent, the Golden Gates and many other places of interest. Kyiv has more than 100 museums, 33 theatres and studio theatres, 53 buildings of cultural significance, 140 libraries, 20 concert organisations and independent music bands, a circus.
The city has unique landscape with half of the total area of the city taken by green areas, ponds and parks. In general, the territorial structure of the city is represented by two major parts: the oldest central part of the city – Pravoberizhzhya, the Right Bank of the Dnipro, and Livoberizhzhya, the Left Bank, which was included in the city territory during the 2nd half of the 20th century.
The Kyiv climate is moderately continental, with fairly mild winters and arm summers.
The city has always been a lure for invaders and has experienced a lot of grief during its existence: the Mongol-Tatar invasion, the attacks of the Crimean khans, Polish derogations, the Nazi occupation. But, each time Kyiv rose back like Phoenix rejuvenated from its ashes and ruins, to keep surprising and give joy.
