Transcarpathian State University

Transcarpathian State University is the higher education institution of the 4th accreditation level of public property founded by the Order of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine (November 17, 2004, No. 843-p) and the Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (November 26, 2004, No. 887) on the basis of Uzhhorod State Institute of Information Science, Economy and Law (founded in 1995).

Rector of Transcarpathian State University is Vashchuk Fedir Hryhorovych, Doctor of Technology, Professor, Academician at the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine’s High School, Honoured Education Worker. He has been leading the University since its foundation.

Transcarpathian State University combines classical and modern methods of teaching in education process, as well as the pedagogical heritage of different generations. For the years of its activity the University has achieved the recognition and respect in the world of education not only in Ukraine, but also abroad.

The University trains bachelors in the following directions: “Computer Sciences”, “Software Engineering”, “Account and Audit”, “Finances and Credit”, “International Relations”, “Tourism” and “Law”.

Specialists and masters are trained in the following directions: “Informational Managing Systems and Technologies”, ”Software of Automatized Systems”, “Account and Audit”, “Banking” ,“Country Study”, “International Business” and “Law”.

The Natural-Humanitarian College trains junior specialists at specialties: “Software Development”, “Accountancy” and “Law”. The University has received the license for training foreign citizens at the accredited basic directions.

The system, introduced at the University, provides the training of students at the following educational and qualification levels: Junior Specialist, Bachelor, Specialist and Master.

Forms of studying: daytime, extramural, distant, extern.

Transcarpathian State University also fulfils pre-university training and re-training of specialists at the following specialties: “Account and Audit”, “Country Study”, as well as raising of level of professional skill in the following directions: “Computer Sciences”, Economy and Entrepreneurship, training of higher-qualification scientific and pedagogical workers – candidates and doctors of sciences. Attestation Board at the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has given the University the right of awarding the scientific titles of assistant professor and professor.

Scientific investigations at 34 complex and 143 individual scientific projects in the field of law, international relations, economy, computer sciences, math and computer modeling, solid-body physics, laser equipment, high-temperature superconductivity are fulfilled at the University. About 2000 scientific and methodical works, including 47 monographs, more than 1060 scientific articles (135 published abroad), 67 textbooks (39 recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine) have been published for the last five years.

The University closely cooperates with the leading educational and scientific institutions of Ukraine, such as: Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, Uzhhorod National University, Lviv National University, Kharkiv National University, Institute of State and Law after V.M. Koretsky at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Institute of World Economy and International Relations at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine etc. The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Institute of Modern History at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Institute of Social Sciences at the Slovak Academy, Košice Technical University, University after P. J. Šafarik in Košice are our foreign partners.

In 1998 the Postgraduate Department started its activity for 10 specialties. Since then 16 thesis have been defended by the members of the staff of the University.

Teaching, methodical, scientific, and administrative work at the University is provided by the staff of 400 skilled professors and tutors (231 scientific and pedagogical workers: 162 of them have scientific tittles, 33 are doctors, professors). For the last years 29 members of the staff have been awarded scientific titles (5 - professor, 20 - assistant professor, 18 – scientific degree of candidate and doctor).

The number of students of the University is 3742 (among them 2144 students of daytime form of study). Studying at the University is fulfilled at the expense of the state budget, physical and juridical persons.

The following prominent scientists, corresponding members of NAS of Ukraine, Honoured lawyers, economists, skilled teachers and cultural workers are involved in the teaching process at the University:

  • Pavlov O.A. – Dean of the Faculty of Computer Sciences and Computer Equipment at the National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”, Doctor of Technology, Professor;
  • Vidnyansky S.V. – Head of the Department of World History and International Relations at Ukrainian History Institute at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of History, Professor, Honoured Scientist and Technician of Ukraine;
  • Mitryayeva S.I. – Director of the Regional Department of Uzhhorod National Institute of Strategic Investigations, Candidate of History, Senior Research Worker, Honoured Scientist and Technician of Ukraine;
  • Vladimir Čečot – State Secretary at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Candidate of Law, Professor;
  • Juraj Sinaj – Rector of Technical University in Kosice, Doctor of Technology, Professor;
  • Bohdan A. Futey – Judge at the Federal Court of Pretensions (USA).

The University publishes the “Transcarpathian State University Scientific Herald”, series: “Economical Sciences” (professional), “History”, “Social and Humanitarian Sciences”, “Euro-Integration: Ukrainian Measurement”, “Higher Education. Technology”, “Collection of Scientific Works on the Materials of International Conferences”, “Bibliographical Index of Scientific-Pedagogical Personnel’s Scientific Works”, students’ “Scientific Herald”.

Transcarpathia’s unique geographic position, due to its bordering on the regions of Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary and playing an important role of link between Ukraine and the European Union, gives possibility to conduct monitoring and to investigate urgent problems of European and Euro-Atlantic integration. At the University this work is also fulfilled by the Educational-Scientific Institute of Eurointegration Researches.

Thus, in 2007 and 2008, this department of the University was the winner at the competition of scientific projects at the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the National Centre of Euro-Integration Studies, and it received state financing for scientific elaborations of problems concerning European and Euro-Atlantic integration in the amount of 280,000 UAH. As the result of the fulfilled order from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, 14 textbooks and 2 method-guides were published. The fact that nine of them received the stamp from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine “Recommended as a textbook for higher education institutions”, testifies to the appropriate scientific level of these publications. Within the limits of fulfilling this project, four international scientific conferences were conducted, where problems concerning realization of tasks about Ukraine’s integration into European society were discussed. After these conferences, four collections of scientific works were published.

The proper level of scientific elaborations of the Institute received positive estimation from the President Secretariat, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Centre of Euro-Atlantic Studies of Ukraine.

In the University, significant attention is paid to computerization, introducing new information technologies to studying process. Eight computer rooms, equipped with modern computers, and multimedia laboratories, are in action. Great amounts of information are transmitted between the buildings by means of high-speed optical channels. All computers are united into a local network, access to the global network Internet is provided at the speeds of up to 10 Mbit/s. Students and tutors of the University are provided with free access to the Internet both from the desktops and from their own mobile PCs thanks to the installed wireless access points Wi-Fi. The internal University TV network is installed – the news, event announcements and information can be watched on the big plasma panels fixed in the foyers of TSU buildings. A new official web-site of Transcarpathian State University is made (www.zakdu.edu.ua) – still more informative and useful both for entrants and students of all studying forms.

Successfully works the Educational-Scientific Institute of Information Technologies. For special contribution into introducing informational technologies into teaching & educative process, Transcarpathian State University was decorated several times with diplomas at international exhibitions. According to the results of participation in the International Exhibition “High Technologies in Studying” and special achievements in the field of information technologies, the University is decorated with the second-degree Diploma and silver medal (2003), first-degree Diploma and golden medal (2006), first-degree Diploma and golden medal (2007). For participation in the 10th Jubilee International Conference of Educational Institutions “Modern Education in Ukraine – 2007”, the University is decorated with the Diploma and bronze medal, and in 2008, at the exhibition “Modern Education in Ukraine – 2008” the University won a silver medal.

Recently, University has been decorated with golden medal in the nomination “International Cooperation in the field of Education and Science” at the International Exhibition “Education and Career – University Entrant - 2010” in the city of Kyiv.

On the basis of the Educational-Scientific Institute of Information Technologies, the “Testing Centre” was established; its purpose is to provide objective estimation of students’ knowledge. Control is fulfilled in a test form due to using its own elaboration – automatized system of controlling students’ knowledge Brain Tester, which was several times represented and distinguished at the international-level exhibitions and conferences.

International cooperation with higher educational and scientific institutions is the important direction of the University activity. The distinguished ones among them are the following: realization of joint scientific and educative projects in the field of law, information science, economy, international relations and international business; exchange of students, postgraduates and tutors; providing practical studying for scientific and pedagogical personnel and students in leading educational institutions abroad; organization of international scientific-practical conferences, etc. Thirty-two appointments with higher educational and scientific institutions of Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Germany, the USA are made and successfully fulfilled.

During recent eight years, Transcarpathian State University together with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine conducted 17 international scientific-practical conferences, whose topics are dedicated to the problems of degree training for specialists with higher education and formation of qualification systems both on Ukraine’s market and abroad in the context of Bologna declaration and Lisbon strategy.

Prior directions of educative work are the following: students’ professional training, scientific activity, juridical, patriotic, moral, labour, ecological and physical training. Many traditional measures are conducted; they take place in such a creative and interecreation way that they often become events, which go beyond the institution. First and foremost, it is dedication to freshers, celebrating Days of Faculties, conducting festival “Your Talents, TSU”, competitions “Freshers’ Debut”, “Miss + Mr. of TSU”, various sport festivals and meetings, etc.

Students’ self-government is well-developed. Students’ Council, Students’ Trade-Union, Students & Post-Graduates Scientific Society, Regional Centre of Ukraine’s Youth Union of Lawyers, students’ juridical clinic, discussion clubs, students’ creative groupings according to the interests, sport sections are well functioning.

Much attention is paid to professional-orientation work, in particular, to involving talented youth to acquiring higher education at the University. Intellectual competition “Future Elite of Transcarpathia” and its TV version “Become a Student” acquired special popularity in the region. The competition winners have the right of prior enrolling to the corresponding faculties of the University and the specialities of the Natural-Humanitarian College at TSU.

At Transcarpathian State University, a powerful material-technical basis is made. It includes five buildings with total area of ca. 20,000 sq. m. Modern lecture-rooms, auditoriums, a conference-hall, studying and scientific laboratories, computer halls, a library, linguaphone rooms, multimedia laboratories, a publishing centre, gymnasiums, training-halls, stadiums, playgrounds, a hostel, medical offices, canteens, cafés are proposed for students and tutors.
