     Canadian Maple Leaf

Canada was the first country to mint a gold coin made of pure gold - MAPLE or MAPLE LEAF. Originally the standard of gold coin in 1 ounce was .999 (99.9% of purity), but since 1983 purity was increased to the maximum - .9999. The highest purity increases the value of Maple Leaf and makes it of a light golden color, though the high purity gold coin is very soft.

On the front side of the coin there is a portrait of Elisabeth II.
On the reverse side there is a Canadian national symbol – Maple Leaf.

    «Closternburgh Abbey» (Austria, 2008)
    – imported to Ukraine for the first time

    Face value: 10 Euro
    Weigh: 18 g
    Metal and standard: 925
    YOM: 2008

The given coin is one of the series of the coins “The outstanding Abbeys of Austria” of the Austrian Mint which was put into use on the 16th of April, 2008.
Going down the Danube, just approaching Vienna, you can get into the small town Closternburgh, which is situated around the ancient Abbey on the hills, overviewing the Danube valley. Since 1114  the monks, sticking to the Saint Augustine`s canons,  have lived here.
Saint Augustine’s Abbey in Closternburgh was founded in 1114 by the margrave Leopold III (afterwards sainted). The legend says that Leopold`s wife, Agness, lost the very expensive scarf in the capful of wind, this scarf was found some years later by Leopold, who was hunting.  The legend says that the virgin Maria`s vision led him to the foundation of the Abbey in that exact place. The legend, certainly, remains only the romantic story, though this scarf still exists and is kept in the museum of the Abbey.
The Saint Leopold is buried in the crypt of the head church under the wing altar, consisting of 45 gilded and enameled frescos, depicting the scenes from the Bible and dated by the end of ХІІ century.
During the Reformation epoch the Abbey turned out to be neglected and devastated, however it was reconstructed and fortified for military aims. In 1683 this fortified construction played its invaluable role in the victory over the Turkish army, besieging Vienna. Closternburgh was also besieged, but with the help of the inhabitants and artillery it managed to repulse an attack of Turks without the outward help.
In 1730 the Emperor Charles VI visited Closternburgh and decided to restore the Abbey as a court complex in Baroque taste, consisting of the four yards and seven luxurious halls, uniting Saint Augustine`s Abbey with the  residence of the emperor (by the model of the Spanish monarch`s residence by  Madrid). The unexpected death of the Emperor in 1740 put an end to the construction and till this day all Closternburgh has remained the unfinished work in Baroque taste with the only one competed internal yard.
The most destroying blow to the Abbey was delivered in  ХХ century by Nazi. In 1941 it was dissolved: some monks were sent out, some of them were sent to the regular army  and the rest of them was put into prisons or shot down for the reason of the support of the underground movement against the Nazi.
Today Closternburgh numbers  47 lay brothers and monks. The Abbey museum, attracting the thousands of tourists every year, has been reconstructed and extended lately. Like the majority of the Abbeys of Austria, Closternburgh can by right be proud of the impressive collection of the works of art, books, coins and medals as well as of the well-known wine-cellars.

    Snow Leopards-MPI 2008

    Endangered Wildlife

The snow leopard (uncia uncia) is a large cat that mainly lives in the Central Asian highlands. Because of his resemblance he is frequently mistaken for a leopard although he has a longer, mostly grey fur and is also smaller than his “brother”. The large cat’s soles are covered with a thick hair pad which enlarges the surface of his feet and enables him to move over the snow-capped mountains as if on snow shoes. This enables him to balance his body weight and the cat of prey doesn’t sink into the snow fields as deep. A much better progression is ensured. This advantage in the wilderness is not to be underestimated.

The mating season is in the months of January up until March. After a gestation period of approx. 100 days the mother can give birth up to five cubs. At birth the cubs are still blind and have a black fur. They weigh about 500 grams and are old enough to go their own way with about 18 to 20 months. The snow leopard is a loner. Up until today one does not know what age this animal can reach in the wild.

In captivity the lifespan can amount to 20 years and more. Unfortunately, as well as many other animals, the snow leopard belongs to the endangered animal species. Globally it is supposed that only 7000 free living animals still exist. The most of these live in China and Mongolia. In the Mongolian Steppe there are unfortunately not even one thousand animals left. Despite the setup of facilities for sanctuaries a constant reduction is registered. Regretfully the reason for the reduction is due to the illegal but lucrative fur hunt.

This collective coin shows cute snow leopard cubs in an elaborate MPI-technology. MPI stands for Minted Photo Image und once again shows the standard of top minting design. Amaze yourself with a mix of a 2-dimensional photo on a 3- dimensional relief.

From an ugly caterpillar, who is often fought against as a ravenous pest, a complete new incredibly beautiful being peels out overnight and overwhelms humans downright with its positive features: light, delicate, natural, innocent, and beyond doubt gorgeous.

The Pacific Island World is incredibly abundant with exceptionally colourful butterfly species. The Republic of Palau has immortalised three of them with a new coin issue:

The orange Hebomoia leucippe who belongs to the family of Pieridae, the blue dazzling Papilio pericles who belongs to the family of Swallowtail butterflies (Papilionidae) and the black and green Graphium agamemnon who is also called Tailed Jay. This butterfly belongs to the family of Papilionidae as well and is identifiable by its characteristic hind wing tail. The special prism technique emphasises the butterflies colours and patterns.

World of Flowers - Poppy in Cloisonné

The term „Cloisonné“ comes from French and means „subdivided“, separated by walls. Cloisonné is a unique enamel art technique. Thereby, in a first step, the motive is soldered onto a copper sheet with a silver wire. This wire pattern serves as a separation of each colour. Now the originated compartments are filled with enamel colours and afterwards the form is fired in the oven with 700 to 900°C. The enamel in the little compartments will sink down a bit after firing. That will require a refilling. This process will go on repeatedly until the little compartments are finally filled. Finally the surface of the work piece is polished and the silver web is electrolytically gilded to prevent an eventual oxidation.

The favourite cloisonné designs are mostly elaborate flower motives and floral swirls. In our case it is a magnificent poppy. In English speaking regions the red poppy has an important meaning; it is a symbol in memory for soldiers killed in action. Thus the Remembrance Day for war victims is also called Poppy Day. It is celebrated every year on the 11th November; on the day the weapons were silenced in the First World War. It is also known as the Polish national flower.

The enamel production has been known for thousands of years. Possibly it originates from the Near East and was spread along the Silk Road to China in the 13th century. It was there that this techniques significance was magnified as an actual form of art and from that time on was applied to vases, plates, tins and also on valuable jewellery miniatures. The favourite designs are mostly elaborate flower motives and floral swirls. In our case it is a magnificent pansy – an emblem for loyalty, affection and loving thoughts.

    Exceptional Animals
    in CMA-Technique

The Asian Peacock (lat. pavo cristatus) is known for its magnificent appearance. It conceals its relatively short body with its long and glittering feathers however uses them to present itself very proudly. The dazzling and fascinating play of colours of the feathers is brought by a light refraction in the air chambers and not, as often assumed, from colour pigments.

About 40 species in Oceania domiciled Birds of Paradise (lat. Paradisaeida) are known. Their appearance as well as their general attitude varies strongly. By using their gorgeous feather splendour the males attempt to impress their female fellow species. Due to the still partly low quantity of animals there is an absolute hunting and feather trade prohibition for all Birds of Paradise.

The “Colour Medium Application” Technique (CMA) is responsible for the amazing visual effect on these new silver coins. Depending on the beholders perspective, a part of the colours change. This causes a play of glint and movement which is perfectly appropriate to both colourful birds.

    World Trade Center
    Remember nine-eleven

In 1966 the foundation stone for the construction of the second highest building in the world was laid. This building was 521 meters high. The highest building was the television tower Ostankino-Tower in Moscow with its 540 meters, although the World Trade Centre had the highest terrace on a building which was situated in 417 meters height. The side length of its two towers was 63, 4 x 63, 4 meters.
The building was opened on April 4th, 1973 and had 100 storeys with a surface area of 400.000 m2. Up to 50.000 people worked in the two towers and in the surrounding 5 buildings. The daily average of 80.000 visitors came to the WTC in order to enjoy the terrific panoramic view over Manhattan/ New York. The first-class Restaurant und Bar „Windows of the World“, was situated on the 106th and 107th floor and ranked among the most attractive restaurants in the New Yorker scene. Advanced bookings, which were necessary to be made weeks before, enabled one to enjoy and savour the nightly view of the city.
The shocking events of the airplane assassination on September 11th 2001 brought the entire complex to collapse. More than 18.000 people were able to leave the building in sufficient time before it caved in. About 3.000 people died.
In place of the WTC a new building complex with a new tower is being constructed. It is called the Freedom Tower and is planed to be 541 meters (1776 ft.) high.   This height (1776 ft.) was chosen as this was the independence year of the United States of America.

    The grey reef shark
    Marine Life Protection

Awe, admiration and respect pay deference to this ocean predator, for its physique has not changed since way above 200 million years. Due to its torpedo shaped body, which can reach up to a length of 2.5 m, the reef shark is very fast and versatile and is therefore able to reach a diving depth of 280 meters.

Among other things he hunts and eats crabs, squids and fish of all kinds nearby coral reefs. Although the shark can also be sighted during the day, he is a nocturnal sea dweller. After a gestation period of twelve months the mother can give birth up to six pups.

His common living space is the Indian Ocean as well as the Western Central Pacific, mainly in offshore areas. The lifespan of the grey reef shark is estimated at about 25 years. Unfortunately also here the humans play a negative part by fishing or killing the animals prematurely for personal entertainment. Therefore this fascinating reef shark is, regrettably, also on the red list of threatened animals.

As Mother Nature has appointed this shark as the “health police“of the ocean, an extinction would have fatal consequences for the ecological balance of the ocean.

Coconuts are a member of the palm family.  Although a coconut is a stone fruit with only one seed it is incorrectly called a nut.  In the tuft of the palm under the armpits of every new formed leaf a coconut grows within approximately 14 months.  The coconut is harvested as a green and unripe fruit.  The leathery wax coated outer skin turns yellowish when the fruit is ripe. Underneath it has a thick filament layer which again covers a very hard inner pod.  For transport reasons the outer skin of the majority of coconuts on sale have been removed.

One assumes that the coconut originates from Melanesia, a pacific island group which lies north-easterly of Australia. The coconut has spread across much of the tropics, probably aided in many cases by seafaring people. It is known that this stone fruit has an extreme high resistance against salt and is therefore widespread. Without losing its germination capacity it can drift in the ocean up until 100 days.

A tropical sandy beach with a turquoise ocean is difficult to imagine without these beautiful Coconut-Palms which can grow up to 30 meters high. This vision and the “Bounty” in the background are shown on this coin.
Rub your finger on the coconut and smell it. Close your eyes and for a short moment soak in a bit of holiday feeling.

The oldest list of the Wonders of the World originated approx. 450 BC by Herodotus. The current commonly used list was compiled by a Greek poet named Antipater from Sidon. The Greek referred to the Wonders of the World as; “The seven places to be seen on the inhabited earth”. As 7 had a special symbolic meaning in the European Ancient World exactly 7 Wonders of the World were specified. The number 7 was believed to be “complete” and sacred.

Antipater’s list includes the following Wonders of the World: Great Pyramid of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus, the Temple of Artemis, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Lighthouse of  Alexandria.

Today only the Great Pyramid of Giza is preserved. The other six constructions were either destroyed by earthquakes, fires or vandalism. Unfortunately only a few illustrations exist. Today one does not even know exactly where these Wonders of the World were situated or what they exactly looked like.

In this coin set the Wonders of the Ancient World are uniquely shown.

The most striking versions of these enamel Fabergé-Eggs, implemented with diamonds and gemstones served as models for these new Cloisonné coins.

Cloisonné, also called wire enamel, is a handcraft technique in which wire separates individual compartments using given patterns. The compartments are filled with enamel powder in various colour mixtures and then fired in the oven. This manner of artistic design originated in ancient Greece and found its way to China and Japan via the Silk Road. The Cloisonné reached its zenith in the Ming Dynasty in the 15th and 16th century.

Enamel design was also extremely appreciated at a later date, for instance in the Russian tsars court in St. Petersburg. It was a tradition in Russia to give eggs as a present at Easter, therefore in 1885 Tsar Alexander III commissioned the jeweller Carl Peter Fabergé to make an extraordinary jewel egg as a gift for his wife Maria. This masterpiece was so successful that from then on the tsar gave his wife a new egg every year. Alexander’s son and successor, Tsar Nicholas II, ordered another 40 imperial eggs at the House of Fabergé before the revolution put an end to this tradition.

    The Pope in Cologne
“In the great Cathedral in Cologne the relics of the Magi are honoured, the Wise Men from the East, who followed the star which led them to Christ. As pilgrims, your spiritual journey to Cologne starts today. Christ awaits you there to celebrate the Twentieth World Youth Day!”
With these words, pronounced at the end of the 2002 World Youth Day in Toronto, Pope John Paul II invited young people from all over the world to come to Germany and attend the 20th World Youth Day from 11 to 21 August 2005.
On the day of his election, Benedict XVI repeated the invitation of his predecessor. Therefore on 18 April, the new Pope’s first journey abroad will take him to Cologne.
It is expected that 800’000 young people will join him, following in the footsteps of the Magi, to discover the “young and modern mystery of the church” (John Paul II) through the joint experience of pilgrimage, prayer and worship.
