The history of library is inextricably related with a history of academy. Maria Dmitrievna Raevskaja-Ivanova has opened school of drawing still in 1869. It was a separate special educational institution of an art-industrial direction. In 1893the school has about 400 volumes. In 1912 Art school have opened in Kharkov. The part of the literature from school of M. Raevskaja-Ivanova has passed in library of Art school. In 1919 school it was transformed into Free state art workshops. In 1921 on their base the Kharkov art technical school (little bit later it began to refer to as institute) was created (as Moscow VHUTEMAS). It should train experts of the top skills for the industry. The Kharkov art institute has settled down in Art school. And the library has passed to it. During war the most part of library was lost. The rest was kept in a basement of institute. Since 1947 Tatyana Nikolaevna Volkova managed library. She began to write down books in the inventory book and to make catalogues. For January, 1 1953 fund of library totaled 22 868 copies. In 1963 Kharkov state art institute was reorganized to Kharkov art-industrial institute and it is reoriented on training of artists of an industrial and decorative direction. Except for the literature on the fine arts, the library has engaged in acquisition of funds by the literature on an industrial art, industrial products, mechanical engineering, architecture, arts and crafts, national crafts. The library got also the literature on questions of theatre, fiction, the literature on anatomy, botany and zoology. In 1966 library began to make thematic card files on a direction of institute and to create the thematic catalogue on an industrial art. At the end of 1980 Nina Viktorovna Soboleva became the director of library. She has continued the business begun by T.N.Volkova. In 1991 library has moved to a special premise the area of 651 sq.m. in a new building of institute. From now on students have started to make out library. Students have made painting on walls, have made stained-glass windows, sculptures, pictures for the main hall and halls of library. Restoration of furniture of the beginning of XX century was begun. In 2007 versatile library fund totals 125 000 books, 8 000 periodicals, 18 220 foreign editions. 1340 copies are stored in fund of rare and valuable editions. Among them - "The costume of the hereditary states of the house of Austria" (London, 1804), "Pycскій народный орнаментъ. Шитье, ткани, кружева" (Release 1, St.-Petersburg, 1872), "Практическое руководство къ живописи масляными красками" F.Iennike (Translation from German, St.-Petersburg, 1884), "Рафаэль: Посмертное изданіе съ 53 рисунками" A.Vysheslavtseva (St.-Petersburg, 1894), "Исторія живописи въ XIX въкъ" R.Muter (St.-Petersburg, 1899). The library fund continues to be completed with the literature on questions of creativity and decorative-consumer art: design, architecture, a history of arts and culture in many languages of the world. In library now there are 4 reading rooms, the subscription. At a directory department the computer reading room is created. All computers are connected to a network the Internet. The help and bibliographic device consists of 4 catalogues and 6 card files. The electronic catalogue have started to create The library will carry out exhibitions - presentations of books. The library participates in cultural - art actions which will be carried out by Academy. The collective of library aspires to continue the traditions incorporated by founders and also to introduce new modern technologies and methods of work of library.
