The origins and tradition of book printing in Ukraine
The invention of movable type and printing presses in Germany around 1450 had a tremendous and lasting influence on the cultural, social, religious, and scientific development of Europe. As the printing technologies spread throughout the continent and allowed for a quicker and wider dissemination of knowledge, they became a major catalyst for both the Reformation and the later scientific revolution...

For those who couldn’t return
Each year migratory birds find their way home. Only cranes in my mind are somehow always flying far off into the horizon. Illogical of course, and my theme, anyway, is political struggle, slogans, calls of “Ukraine for Ukrainians”. Yet beyond the human cacophony, it is another cry which endures: the cry as the cranes fly away: “I will die in a foreign land”. The Ukrainian poet and author of these words, Bohdan Lepky lies buried in Poland, in Krakow.

No more tanks?
20 years ago, on 5 June 1989, one man stopped a tank. He will be remembered this week in many countries, that young man without a name, without a past or future. For millions of television viewers there were only those moments when he refused to let the tanks pass...

Without positive content
In Soviet times the logic was eminently simple. If the Party is always right, then those who oppose it are either criminals or madmen. Those unable or unwilling to acknowledge exclusive rights to the one and only truth are no longer executed, sent to labour camps or “treated” in psychiatric hospitals...

What if women ran the world?
It is getting harder to escape the sense that most of the trouble in the world – whether it`s coming out of the Senate, a mortgage lender, or a tank turret – can be traced to one overriding problem: too many men steering. Had our economic, domestic, and foreign policy been more informed by women, we might be enjoying a safer ride.

A fair deal for women
When it comes to the top EU jobs the picture is even more bleak: out of 12 European Parliament presidents, only two have been women, and there has never been a female president of the European Commission.
