If Ukraine’s economy could run on young female pop stars, we could all kiss the crisis goodbye. Unfortunately that’s not the case, but at least no one can claim any deficit of good-looking girls dancing and singing on massive flat-screen TVs. The latest, and youngest, of the bunch to make a run at the Ukrainian big time is Wassabi, a 16-year-old from Zaporizhya. With the help of producer Dima Klimashenko, she hit the airwaves last year with her first pop confection.

The mighty Disney/Pixar pictures have taken a leaf from hit Baltic cartoon ‘Karlson’ by dubbing their latest offering in Ukrainian. ‘Cars’ is a charming auto themed capper which will feature the voice of the delectable Olga Sumska together with those of actors Ostap Stupka and Andriy Sereda.

For many Kyivites and long time expats the hustle and bustle that was Sennoy flea market was the heart and soul of the Ukrainian capital. This sentiment wasn’t shared by all however - least of all the political powers that be - who, after a Machiavellian campaign, succeeded in having it closed down and sold land to foreign developers for a handsome sum. But as Yuriy Yermolenko’s upcoming exhibition dedicated to the market shows, the former frequenters of Sennoy aren’t going down without a fight.

Times have changed a little bit in the world of automobiles here in the Mother City of the Slavs. For a long time, easy credit and cheap petrol conspired to create a local situation in which ‘the bigger, the better’ was the operative logic, which means that you couldn’t walk 10 metres in the city without bumping into a massive brand-new night-coloured SUV. (Or it bumping into you.) But with Ukraine feeling the squeeze of the financial crisis, that’s all over for the moment, and it might be time for Ukrainians to start taking to smaller cars. The new Mitsubishi Lancer X Sportback is precisely one of those cars. We took it out for a test spin.
