 Spicy Popstar Hopeful Wassabi

If Ukraine’s economy could run on young female pop stars, we could all kiss the crisis goodbye. Unfortunately that’s not the case, but at least no one can claim any deficit of good-looking girls dancing and singing on massive flat-screen TVs. The latest, and youngest, of the bunch to make a run at the Ukrainian big time is Wassabi, a 16-year-old from Zaporizhya. With the help of producer Dima Klimashenko, she hit the airwaves last year with her first pop confection.

Odessa is famed for its humour and artist Igor Gusev, a resident of the Black Sea port, will inject some much needed southern humour into the local art scene at his upcoming ‘Complaints on Spam’ exhibition. Mocking those hangers-on who attend ostentatious openings on the basis of an artist’s name and reputation, Gusev will hang paintings round the wrong way with only the back exposed to the public.

World Cup Football, Ukraine vs. Saudi Arabia, sports bars across town, 19 June at 19.00

Pundits say that there are no easy games in international football, but if Ukraine aren’t able to put at least a couple past the Arabian kingdom then Blokhin’s Boys really don’t deserve to go through to the knockout stages. Yaser Al Kahtani is one Saudi player who could pose the well marshaled Ukrainian defence problems; the quick forward is an excellent dribbler and is earmarked as the next big thing in Asian football.

James Blunt in concert, Palace Sport (1 Sportyvna Pl.), 2 March at 19.00
James Blunt is the English folk-rock singer-songwriter who rose to fame back in 2005 with his debut album, Back to Bedlam, which featured appealing singles like You’re Beautiful. The BRIT award  winner and Grammy nominee’s mellow style melds pop, rock and folk, and his rough-hewn looks tend to win over the women in the audience. Tickets will soon be on sale for this latest excellent rock-music offering from Palace Sport, of all places, which has been on a roll with its bookings for the last year or so. For more information call 246-7406.
