Don’t forget flowers and kisses, of course, but remember, nothing can compare to a dinner in one of Kyiv’s luxurious restaurants.  Spicy Popstar Hopeful Wassabi

If Ukraine’s economy could run on young female pop stars, we could all kiss the crisis goodbye. Unfortunately that’s not the case, but at least no one can claim any deficit of good-looking girls dancing and singing on massive flat-screen TVs. The latest, and youngest, of the bunch to make a run at the Ukrainian big time is Wassabi, a 16-year-old from Zaporizhya. With the help of producer Dima Klimashenko, she hit the airwaves last year with her first pop confection.

This Week Germany’s Electropoppers
Thursday, 22 January 2009
Kissogram, Xlib club (12 Frunze), 24 January at 23.00
A electropop group from Berlin that’s now about a decade old, Kissogram crafts simple, accessible and slightly weird tunes like their hit I’m The Night Before (in which lyric of the title is followed by ‘…you die’) and She’s an Apple Pie. They played here last year, so Kyiv audiences should already be familiar with their work. This time around, they’ll be backed by Joe Dillwort, whose drumwork will provide the necessary beats for the band when they perform at Xlib.

Pop outfit Antytila has been at it since 2004, playing an intelligent variety of pop-rock music and even managing to get it over on people who particularly like neither pop nor rock. They’re seasoned veterans of the Kyiv club scene and of the huge stage on Maidan Nezalezhnosti alike. After four years they’ve finally put together their debut album. You’ve already seen the video for their song Miami in rotation on local music television, and now you can come and hear the rest of their act.

Black O!Range Jazz Ballet, SCO!TCH, Kyiv Academic Youth Theatre (1517 Lypska), 25 January at 20.00
The Black O!Range Jazz Ballet is a troupe of young dancers whose thing is experimental modern ballet. Their latest ballet doesn’t tell a story or seem to have anything like a plot, but it still manages to show the protagonist dealing with the difficult and complex circumstances of the modern globalised word, lost in the wishes, habits and problems of the people around him. Or at least that’s what we’re told. Apart from the ballet, guests will also have a chance to witness a performance by the French guitarist and composer Rene Aubry.

Ukraine Travel Getting to Know Ukraine’s Ski Resorts
Thursday, 22 January 2009
Ukrainians tend to look to their neighbours like Poland or Slovakia for skiing, or, if they can afford to, they gaze as far away as the Alps or the Rockies. Why? Simple: those places have more well-developed resorts (while the Rockies, up there on the high-altitude middle of the American continent, simply have more and drier snow). But in the last few years domestic winter tourism has been on the rise in Ukraine, and resorts in the country have been rushing to meet the demand.

James Blunt Thinks Kyiv is Beautifu

James Blunt in concert, Palace Sport (1 Sportyvna Pl.), 2 March at 19.00
James Blunt is the English folk-rock singer-songwriter who rose to fame back in 2005 with his debut album, Back to Bedlam, which featured appealing singles like You’re Beautiful. The BRIT award  winner and Grammy nominee’s mellow style melds pop, rock and folk, and his rough-hewn looks tend to win over the women in the audience. Tickets will soon be on sale for this latest excellent rock-music offering from Palace Sport, of all places, which has been on a roll with its bookings for the last year or so. For more information call 246-7406.

Kyiv Cars

From Mitsubishi A Good, Standard Ride

Times have changed a little bit in the world of automobiles here in the Mother City of the Slavs. For a long time, easy credit and cheap petrol conspired to create a local situation in which ‘the bigger, the better’ was the operative logic, which means that you couldn’t walk 10 metres in the city without bumping into a massive brand-new night-coloured SUV. (Or it bumping into you.) But with Ukraine feeling the squeeze of the financial crisis, that’s all over for the moment, and it might be time for Ukrainians to start taking to smaller cars. The new Mitsubishi Lancer X Sportback is precisely one of those cars. We took it out for a test spin.
