Ukrnafta (UNAF) up 2.61%, Zakhidenergo (ZAEN) up 6.48% and Ukrsotsbank (USCB) up 7.22% were the most traded stocks. The main focus yesterday once again was the Ukraine’s currency, which is down nearly 50% against the dollar since August. Oil is set for the second-biggest weekly drop in more than five years, as the recession is prompting final consumers to cut fuel usage. European shares and U.S. stock-index futures declined on concern the deteriorating global economy will hurt the earnings outlook. We expect PFTS to retreat today. Current events 19.12.2008 Parliament hikes depreciation rate by 25 p.p. to promote industrial modernization Yesterday the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine approved a law that allows industrial enterprises to increase depreciation rate by 25 p.p. The law is targeted at supporting Ukraine’s ailing industry (in November, industrial production dropped 28.6% yoy) and promoting modernization of fixed assets. more 19.12.2008 NBU amends forex market rules The NBU chairman Volodymyr Stelmakh announced that the central bank will change the rules of the interbank foreign exchange market to stabilize the hryvnya exchange rate. The new rules will be effective December 22. more 19.12.2008 Arcelor quits the consortium with IUD According to the daily Kommersant, Arcelor Mittal Kryviy Rih (KSTL) withdrew its participation in the consortium with the Industrial Union of Donbas. In July 2008, the two parties established a consortium aimed at privatization of Kryviy Rih Oxidized Iron Ore (KGOKOR). more 18.12.2008 Government releases macroeconomic assumptions for 2009 budget Yesterday Ukrainian government released macroeconomic forecasts for the next year’s state budget. The Cabinet projects GDP growth of 0.4% yoy, CPI of 9.5% yoy and PPI of 12% yoy in 2009. more 18.12.2008 External debt stock grows 7.6% qoq in 3Q08 Ukraine’s external debt increased 7.6% qoq or 42% yoy in 3Q08 to USD 105.4 bln (57.0% of GDP), according to the National Bank of Ukraine. more 18.12.2008 S&P downgrades Interpipe to CC According to Interfax, yesterday Standard & Poor’s downgraded long-term credit rating of Interpipe from B to CC with negative outlook. Rating in local currency was downgraded from uaBBB to uaCC. more 18.12.2008 Motor Sich contracts for 2009 reach USD 470 mln Motor Sich (MSICH) announced that total value of its contracts for 2009 amount to USD 470 mln, up from USD 360 mln in 2008. more 18.12.2008 Sumy Frunze to increase output by 40% yoy in 2008 According to the company’s press-release, Sumy Frunze (SMASH) expects to increase its output by 40% yoy to UAH 1.92 bln in 2008.
