Klyuyev knows what is more valuable than oil and gold

The power should work out a common approach to the technical re-equipment of Ukrainian nuclear plants. Member of parliament of Ukraine, a Party of Regions leader Andriy Klyuyev claimed this to UNIAN, commenting on the decision of the Fuel-Energy Ministry’s scientific board to approve of the use of CANDU Canadian nuclear reactors in Ukraine.

He recalled that, on May 20, 2008, the Fuel-Energy Ministry’s scientific board approved of the opportunity of CANDU reactors use at Ukrainian nuclear power plants.

In his opinion, Ukraine should keep on using BBER reactors, because “they are much cheaper, and Ukraine has highly skilled personnel who can maintain and design them”.

“Rapid attempts to lobby a concrete western producer, either Canadian or French, may force the state to suffer significant additional expenses, and, consequently, to become even more depending”, A.Klyuyev stressed. He noted that the problem of training thousands of qualified professionals cannot be underestimated. According to him, “the intellectual resource is much more valuable that oil and gold”.

A.Klyuyev believes that attempts to buy licensed projects in Russia or Canada for building new nuclear reactors indicate “the irresponsible attitude of authorities to the native science”. Former Deputy Prime Minister is confident that Ukraine must do its best to increase its independence in the nuclear energy sector – first of all, over developing its own intellectual potential.

A.Klyuev called “absolutely inadequate” the steps of the government aimed at replacing control schemes in the nuclear power engineering. He supports the decision of the Yanukovych’s government to create a vertically integrated state concern, which would unite all nuclear power enterprises in the country.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on April 17, 2008, the government of Yulia Tymoshenko ordered the Fuel-Energy Ministry to finally wipe out Ukratomprom concern and to submit document for creating “Nuclear fuel” state concern.
