New server added at Panoramio

Panoramio's Blog

New server added

December 15th, 2006 by Eduardo Manchón

We just added a new server. Photos should load much faster now. Also some bizarre bugs that some of you got the last days shouldn’t appear anymore. We are working right now on database issues. You will see further improvements in the site peformance during the next days.

Since Panoramio’s layer in Google Earth was released last Saturday we are sleeping little, but no complains. Around 10.000 new photos are uploaded every day to Panoramio, it’s so nice!.

We are looking forward to the next update of Panoramio’s layer inside Google Earth’s “Geographic web”. There will be more photos visible. Some locations will be corrected thanks to the community suggestions. Not descriptive photos will not be visible.

I would like to thank the people that gave us feedback about the site and reported issues. We appreaciate it very much.

Great idea, but, I don’t want it. I want a google earth map without pics. What setting do you have for turning off your service? This is a complaint. I don’t go to google earth for pictures of unknown people waving at me. If I wanted it, you would have to give me a friends list. And an option to turn it off.

At Google Earth go to “Geographic web” layer at Google Earth and uncheck “Panoramio” for disabling blue icons from Panoramio.

We are filtering photos of people, animals, etc, so they will disappear from Google Earth gradually this week.

I can’t seem to log fully into your system - I use my proper login name and password and get partial, but not full access to the photos I have uploaded, and I can’t upload any more or edit the ones already uploaded. Is this related to your server upgrade?

  4. 4 Joaquín Cuenca Abela

    Hi Keith,

    not, it’s not related (AFAIK).

Please contact me at joaquin at panoramio.com with your user ID. I will take a look.

It seems you are growing. This is great!!! I hope you will never give up… Because your site is sencillamente maravilloso. I already knew the Google Maps API, but getting it embedded in my page with all the pushpins was just a huge manual task I would have never done. And then, just a week ago, a friend told me about Panoramio. You were reading my dreams, apparently. Thank you.

I had really enjoyed finding Panoramio photos at Google and I agree that some must be filtered. I love to see photos of the place at the right point it was taken, but I do not want to see particular photos of people or their pets. I believe that soon will have thousands of photos, so a very simple way to disabling blue icons from Panoramio will be nice.
I think that if people of everywhere put pictures of their places will be a fantastic way to really see what it is. I have already uploaded 3 photos of Ilhabela, in Brazil, where I have been visiting recently.
Good luck with this magnify job!

    Hi pinkareta,

    thanks for your kind words.

Hopefully this week we will have another batch of photos uploaded to Google Earth with all the familly and pets photos filtered out.

In the mean time, to disable the Panoramio layer you only have to uncheck the “Geographic Web” checkbox you have on the Google Earth sidebar.

    Hope it helps,

  8. 8 Brian

    請問一下你的照片是如何放在google earth上頭的?

  9. 9 Geronimo

I have the difficulties to manage this site and to write in English! But I atempt. I think that in many times I will can use the site and I can will see the pictures. But I want to put my pictures of my trips over Patagonia with my Motorcycle and over the Chile. And over for all my country: Brazil, and Uruguay, Argentine, etc.

    Hi,

I’ve only just discovered panoramio through google earth. It’s a great idea. I have heaps of photos I’m eager to upload. However I’m yet to successfully upload a photo. I have fast broadband but my reasonably sized photos (around 500kb) have been uploading for over an hour.

Have you had a huge influx in users since google earth.? If the system under some strain? Or am I doing something wrong?

    Thanks,
    Travis

    Great idea !!!!
I just registered yesterday, and downloaded a picture of Passo di Ca’ San Marco, on the Orobic Alps …
I was willing to add some more pictures today, but it seems the server is quite busy
I guess you … “we” are in need of a more powerfull server to tackle the success of this wondrfull idea

Great Site. A good chance to display pictures of Places that you think others might like to visit. It would be nice to display the email address of the person who took the picture so other’s could ask questions. Rusty Barnett

  15. 15 gper

I second that! A specially when finding a picture through Google Earth it would be nice to be able to contact the photographer. It would be nice it could be done through panoramio so that you don’t have to expose your address…

  16. 16 wsuomynona

    I agree with gper.

  17. 17 Chris Bassett

I just noticed some of my photos have been put on the Google Earth geographic web layer…yay !! If you were involved in choosing which ones go in that layer, then thank you very much. This whole site is awesome, I hope you have great success with it.

I’m not sure about exposing an email address, but some way to send a message would be very welcome. Though the comments is nice, being able to send/receive a private message would also be good, especially if I could block senders that I didn’t want to hear from again.

    Many thanks,
    Chris.

  19. 19 Fernando

We are experiencing problems uploading photographs and moving aroun your site. Since we want to build our pictures database around Panoramio, that causes a big problem to us. Are yoyu having any problem? Is this upset only a temporary matter? Thanks

  20. 20 Johann

I cant upload my pics, who can help me?

  21. 21 Met

If a photo is descriptive and accepted on the google map, how long will it stay there (be replaced by another member)?

  22. 22 Anonymous

    Hallo Johann,

I have the same problem since several days. When I have already choose the photo, there appear words “starting upload”, and nothing happens - uploading does not start !!!

I have snt an e-mail to panoramio, but I did not get any answer. It is a pity, because I have nabny very fine photos.
Can I ask You for response, when You will solve this problem ?
    My e-mail - millotaurus@poczta.onet.pl

    Massive attack, Travis, Paolo,

Since the January 4th most of server problems have been fixed and you should have seen an increase in the speed for both uploading and watching photos.

    Rusty, wsuomynona Gper

We can display the e-mail of the author because of privacy, but you can add a comment to a photo. The autor will get an e-mail alert about your comment. Soon we want to include a system to send and receive private messages.

    Fernando, Johann, Grzegorz

We still couldn’t reproduce this bug in the upload. Joaquin is out right now, he will be back on a couple of days and take a look on it.

    Grzegorz

I answered your e-mail yesterday, sorry for the delay. I hope you got it.

    Eduardo

  24. 24 Chris C

Moderation over what pictures are published to the Google Earth layer would be a great thing. If there are 500 pictures taken of a certain spot, I don’t want to see 490 crap pictures. I want to see the 10 best. Pictures of your family or pets are fine but they don’t belong in the Google Earth layer. The Google Earth layer should be for the cream of the crop.

  25. 25 millotaurus

    Eduardo,
    Something has changed from yesterday…
    I can load…sometimes, one picture…it means, one picture…every day,,,:-)
There is really something wrong.I hope You will try to solve this problem. Best regards !

  26. 26 millotaurus

    Hallo Chris C.

    You are absolutely right !
I think, that pictures should show the spirit of the place and maybe, with one word, should be…”tasteful”.
Let them be even 500, even more

  27. 27 Eduardo Manchón

    Chris C,

Yes, I also agree with you. We are developing an algorithm for selecting the best quality photos more visible. It will be ready soon.

    Millotaurus,

Joaquin is back and taking a look on that weird problem. It seems that it only happens with few configurations. Until we fix it you may try with other browser or another computer.

    Regards,

    Eduardo

  28. 28 millotaurus

    Something new in uploading
Now, the word “undefined” (red colour !) appears, when I am trying to load any photo…HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP !!!

  29. 29 jake

I love panoramio, keep this ip please.

  30. 30 Eduardo Manchón

It took us more time than expected but now the bugs in the uploading system that were affecting some people are fixed.

Hi there, I have been using google earth lately and i like taking pictures of new zealand landscapes so I thought i would share them. I discovered panoramio and have since been trying to upload photos with no success. I have left it to upload for hours sometimes even though the pictures are only about 600kb.

    Any suggestions?
