Don’t say you didn’t know
The Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union is sending the Prosecutor General a list of people who have been tortured in police stations. The list is of people who were subjected to torture by police officers and whose complaints were not properly investigated by the prosecutor’s office. The information was received from all regions of Ukraine and has been checked by human rights defenders.

26 June 2006 is International Day in Support of Victims of Torture and events are taking place throughout the day in Ukraine to highlight the problem of torture by law enforcement officers and in penal institutions. Press conferences will be held by the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union in Kyiv and by the Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group in Kharkiv

Cultural organizations can’t compete
The Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union has expressed concerned over the increasing trend by bodies of local self-government to take premises away from organizations working in human rights defence and the cultural sphere, these including libraries, houses cultural centres, bookshops, galleries and civic organizations.
