President slams new law on import duties

President Victor Yushchenko returned to Verkhovna Rada the Law on alteration of the Law of Ukraine on Customs-tariff, for its reconsideration.

In his written address to the deputies President explained returning the abovementioned law with the fact, that in the presented form it violates Ukraine’s international agreements and obligations.

Victor Yushchenko stressed that main aim of alternating the law on customs-tariff had been bringing Ukrainian import duties for some goods in compliance with our country’s obligations coming out of its membership in the WTO. Yet the new addition of the law foresees that necessary changes of import duties for some products (including meat, alcohol drinks, chocolate, automobiles) would enter into force only on January 1, 2009. According to President that is shortsighted approach and delay in our country’s obligations fulfillment.

Therefore President Yushchenko asked the deputies to re-discuss the abovementioned law and to improve it in the abovementioned parts with concideration of President's criticism.
