Kyivstar Introduces 'Web Navigator' Service
Kyivstar mobile commutations operator has introduced a Web Navigator service with the help of which its clients can browse Internet pages on their mobile phone screen. Ukrainian News has obtained a copy of the company's statement with this information. The service is good for ordinary web pages, not only for WAP pages; the client can read and download documents of PDF and MS Office format, read and answer e-mails using a mobile phone compatible with WAP. If the client wants to use the service, he should visit the WAP portal of the operator, click on the link to the Web Navigator service on the main page, and type the address of the Internet page he wants to visit in the top box of the page. The other way is to use the USSD command. In this case, the client should dial *133# and press call button on his mobile phone. A message with the link to the service on the operator's portal will come to his phone soon after.

Oil prices drop on economy fears
Oil prices have fallen on concerns about the health of US economy and expectations of more output from Opec. US sweet, light crude dropped 75 cents to $85.27 a barrel, while London Brent crude fell 42 cents to $82.85. Oil is now about $5 off its $90.07 peak set last week, but analysts are divided over which way it will head. Turkey's diplomatic efforts in dealing with Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq and an expected rise in US oil stocks also spurred the retreat in prices. Analysts say that the oil price is highly sensitive to news on crude supply, economic data and geopolitics. "The market is still overheated from its rally and could go down to around $80," said Gerard Rigby, from Fuel First Consulting in Sydney.

UK manufacturing orders decline
UK factory orders fell in October, a survey from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) suggests. However, the broader picture is that orders grew strongly over the last three months. The CBI said there was little evidence that weakness in financial markets was having an effect on manufacturers. The report said that orders from overseas were down in October with "exporters feeling the impact of the weaker dollar". Manufacturers were more pessimistic about the business environment "in the wake of the credit crunch". The data will fuel arguments about whether or not the Bank of England should cut interest rates. Analysts are predicting that the government is likely to leave interest rates on hold at 5.75% for the time being.

Row brews over Russian beer pact
Danish brewer Carlsberg has denied claims from Scottish & Newcastle (S&N) that it has breached the terms of a joint venture between the two firms. On Tuesday, S&N said that Carlsberg had breached terms of the agreement for the jointly-owned Russian beer business, Baltic Beverages Holding (BBH). The move comes after Carlsberg and Heineken said last week that they were considering a joint bid for S&N. S&N said it was now considering whether to take full control of BBH. The Edinburgh-based S&N also said it might seek a new partner for BBH, which is seen as one of S&N's most-prized assets.

Ukraine in gas talks with Gazprom
Ukraine's energy minister has been holding crucial talks to try to avert a threat from neighbouring Russia to cut gas supplies to the country. Russian gas monopoly Gazprom said the threat would be carried out unless a $1.3bn (£650m) bill is paid this month. Reports from Russia say Gazprom is now claiming that Ukraine had agreed to meet the deadline - but this was unconfirmed by Kiev. The European Commission has called for a "speedy solution" to the dispute. Previous disputes between Russia and Ukraine over gas supplies have led to cuts in gas deliveries to Europe.

BSkyB criticised over ITV stake
BSkyB's purchase of a 17.9% stake in ITV restricts competition, a provisional ruling by regulators probing the deal has concluded. The Competition Commission said the share, bought for £940m in 2006, would allow BSkyB to influence ITV strategy. But it said it did not believe the stake brought competition concerns in areas such as advertising or TV news. The commission will now consult on what could be done, including possibly forcing the sale of the stake.

Japan sees jump in trade surplus
Japan's trade surplus hit a 24-year high in August, with surging exports to other Asian nations and Europe offsetting slower sales to the US. The monthly surplus grew 288% from a year earlier to 743bn yen ($6.47bn; £3.2bn), led by rising car exports. While exports to other Asian countries soared 16.4% and to Europe by 15.6%, those to the US rose by just 4.6%. The weak US figure is being seen as a further sign that the American economy is slowing.

Airport operator BAA to cut jobs
Airport operator BAA has said it is to cut jobs, but has played down reports that 2,000 positions may go. BAA said some jobs would be lost, but it did not yet have a final number, adding that security and customer service roles would be unaffected. The positions are being removed as part of an efficiency review at the UK's largest airport business. BAA owns Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Southampton airports. BAA denied reports that it was also looking at selling one or more of its sites.
