The sleepy, picturesque town of Rakhiv in Zakarpattya oblast, right in the geographic heart of continental Europe, has long been known as an economic crossroads and trading center. Now, in light of Budapest’s Sziget festival, the citizens of Rakhiv have decided to host their own music festival this weekend – the Sept. 25 Europe-Center Music Festival.
The townsfolk of Rakhiv, which can be found on the Tysa River some 200 kilometers from Uzhgorod near the Carpathian Biosphere Preserve and Mt. Hoverla – Ukraine’s highest peak, have announced that Serbia’s Boban Marcovic Orkestar will headline the one-day festival. The Boban Marcovic Orkestar, which features more than 20 musicians and performers, has produced soundtracks for Emir Kusturitsa movies and will prove a particular treat for those already familiar with the music of Serbian composer/conductor Goran Bregovic.
Joining the headliners will be locally known pop rocker Katya Chilly, Julia Lord and the Balkan Groove System (Ukraine, Serbia), DazzleDreams (Ukraine, Czech Republic), the Gorgisheli band (Ukraine, Georgia), DJ Derbastler (Ukraine) and several other small Ukrainian bands Percalaba, Burdon and Yu-Ra among others.
The purpose of the concert, other than to let loose, have fun, and enjoy some good music, is to popularize Ukraine in the rest of Europe. Join the local villagers and music fans from far and wide for this first of its kind, multi-ethnic music festival.
